He was apparently smoking dope, late for curfew, got caught, got mad at the coaches and was acting a fool. I applaud BB for being able to stick to his guns and his team rules. Just blows my mind how a guy is so selfish and would let his team down like that. Then again, it happens all the time so I shouldn't be too surprised. To be clear, while this might be the case, I have seen no credible reports other than talk radio rumors that this was the reason, and as others pointed out BB did not cite any of these reasons for why he didn't play. I'm not saying what he did or did not do (I do not know), but I'd be hesitant to talk about how selfish he is when we don't know if he did any or all of those things (and the Patriots staff denies it). And, as others have said, had he done them during the week the decision would likely have been made earlier to make the switch (i.e., not immediately before the game started), and also dressing him and having him play one snap of special teams is just strange if it was disciplinary for all those reasons. I also note that Tom Brady just posted online, calling Butler a "great friend and teammate." I'm not sure Brady would say that if he had done all of the "selfish" things you note. Anyway, I am weirdly inclined to think it really was performance and not disciplinary. Butler struggled the last few games, he and others said he did not have a good week or two of practice before the SB (in part because he was sick). It's perfectly possible that Belichick and Ernie Adams on a final film review of practice and the prior games just decided to switch. (Then again, odd to go from 98% of snaps all the way to zero?) Whole situation is bizarre.

Don’t disagree. But why didn’t they say it was a displinary reason? And why does he get to play special teams. Something doesn’t quite add up. Yeah I am with you. I don't get that either and was thinking that too. I know that BB likes to be secretive about almost EVERYTHING, but why not just say "He violated team rules so we're benching him." instead of saying I've made my choice. That's the end of this conversation. Pure speculation, if it's 'discipline', the collective bargaining agreement may dictate a process you have to follow, especially if it's discipline for something drug related, if it's a 'coach's decision' he could just decide to do it and call it a day. Again, pure speculation on my part.

It was a while ago so I don't remember exactly how it went down, but I do know that we got smoked by 40....... so my guess is that the JV didn't get many reps that week. We were 3-6 and out of it and we were facing a 5-3 team who needed the win to get in. What I DO remember is that the message I wanted sent was much more important than the win. We didn't have any issues with Senior Skip Day after that. I am all for expectations and holding kids to expectations so I wasn't questioning your decision at all. I just was kind of wondering how it all played out. I couldn't have given reps to seniors knowing I wouldn't have played them so I was curious about that aspect of things. My assumption was that if seniors missed reps that they could have figured out that they weren't playing, but probably a bad assumption. If they were smart enough to figure that out, then they probably would have been smart enough not to skip in the first place. No worry...also, it was my first head coaching gig and I made a lot of mistakes that year (much like all the other years), but that wasn't one of them. It was one of the best things I could have done moving forward.

My FIRST year as a head coach, I inherited a program that had MASSIVE discipline problems. I set the rules early on and kids adapted very quickly. One of the biggest issues was that kids missed practice in the years prior to me being there. The first week of the season I had a few kids miss practice and I suspended both of them for the first quarter of the game. I told them as soon as possible. However, the last week of the season we had a "Senior Skip Day" on Monday (we were 3-5 at the time, and out of a playoff berth). I told our seniors that if they missed school they would NOT be able to practice and they WOULD NOT PLAY IN THE GAME. I had 13 seniors miss practice on that day. Normally, I would tell them right away. However, I knew if I did that they would cash in the season early. So I didn't say anything about it until game day. I brought up 10 sophomores and not ONE of those 13 seniors played Friday night.......ON SENIOR NIGHT. Ten minutes before the game I ran down the personnel on all specials and Offense/Defense and none of them included those seniors. Needless to say, it was a eye opener. The following Monday all I did was field angry phone calls and parent meetings. Looking back, I wouldn't change a thing. A fairly successful soccer coach did this by me last May. The next game was their first playoff game and they were seeded near the top of the section . She warned her Seniors ahead of time if they participated in Senor ditch day and missed practice they would sit the next game. Five of her 8 Starting Seniors ditched. She sat them and they were upset in the first round of the playoffs. She was fired later that week by her AD.

I don't know any more than anybody else on here why Belichick benched Butler for Super Bowl LII, and don't really care.
The game was played the way the game was played by those who played it.
Any of you old timers remember the Stanley Wilson (Bengals) "incident" before Super Bowl XXIII?

Not for permission, but just a heads up. I am AD and would support you. But I sure would support you much easier if you gave me a heads up. My coaches are great and they let me know stuff all the time. They know I can give some sound advice and be a sounding board. We will even disagree on some stuff. But they know I have their back. But it is a lot EASIER to have someone's back when you aren't blindsided. Y'all think football and athletics is tough, try cheerleading. I had to dismiss TWO senior cheerleaders this year on basketball SENIOR night. I backed up the coach and even made the final phone call to the MOM. Hell hath no fury...

I understand that some feel he is above reproach but this is a grown man....not a teenager. Leaving him hanging in the wind is an awful look. If Butler did nothing wrong, then allowing him to be slandered by rumors (just look through this thread) Bill is showing that he has no respect for his player. If it was disciplinary, just say so and move on. Zero tactical advantage can be gained by him withholding this type of information. One could argue that it actually hurts the Patriots.

I don't know. Just sharing the data.

This isn't some tactical mind game of whether or not Brady is wearing a glove or if Gronk is practicing. He already did. He said it was to give his team the best chance to win in his opinion. The is that his comments were not salacious enough for media (whether they were true or false)... so the media is looking for a story. I get it..the guy played a bunch, and now he isn't good enough? Seems fishy to me too, but it is what it is. They aren't running a radio call in show. Regarding the money that craines10 mentioned, it doesn't really matter WHY he was benched. He was benched. Do you think it helps Butler if Belichick called a press conference and says "Hey, guys, there is no truth to all of these rumors...I really, honestly, 100% truthfully just thought that he was not capable of doing the job". Does that message bolster his career? Does it help if it comes out that Belichick's definition of "best chance to win" meant not to play someone whose judgement he questioned after finding out about questionable actions? Not really. Is that really disciplinary in nature, or is it football?

If Butler did nothing wrong, his entire tape for his career speaks for what he can do on the field. Do you honestly think an AWOL Super Bowl dude is worth the same as a guy that possibly just had the flu? I just think the NFL is different. They're men and deserve a different level of respect. I think the Eagles and Pederson displayed that and benefited greatly off that love.

Everything else is the "radio show show" guys trying to drum something up. The entertainment aspect of football is not based on the same principles as the radio show, so your comment is wrong there. They put a product on the field. If your enjoyment of that is hindered by not knowing the inner workings of personnel decisions by the most winning coach of the time--I would venture you are in the very very very very (4 times) small minority.

I've read up on this issue. I just have a different opinion on how he needs to treat the player involved. My enjoyment is not hindered at all. I'm not a Patriots fan and really not a huge NFL fan. I'm perfectly fine if I'm the only coach on this board that disagrees with BB. The guy is legendary, but he can be wrong. I'd just like for him to show a little humility and admit it was a poor plan (not telling players until kick) OR that he was straight up lying if Butler was truly acting a fool during the week. That's not radio show fodder, it's simply respect.

You might want to hear that but what incentive does BB have for doing that? Better question--What's he have to lose by doing that?

You might want to hear that but what incentive does BB have for doing that? Better question--What's he have to lose by doing that? First, to answer your question directly, HE ALREADY COMMENTED! Period. End of story. What exactly do you want to have happen? BB did what he felt was necessary and as fantom said, he is on to the next. The fact that YOU and others are not taking him at his word, is not his problem. Quite frankly, for someone who says they don't really follow the NFL, you sure are coming off as someone who is just dying to be a part of the radio call in gossip. Keep in mind also, what you want to have happen really isn't the BB way. He made his comment. Maybe other coaches, like a Rex Ryan might want to have some more limelight and get infront the cameras again. Belichick already made a comment.

Look, I'm one of the guys who thinks BB royally screwed the pooch here.
But that said, he actually addressed this MORE than he usually does. He's never really commented on why guys do/don't play. In this case, he went so far as to say he respected Butler's willingness to compete, and he understands that Butler and other guys on the team thought he could make a difference, but he felt he made the best decision for the team. That's like a friggin novel coming out of BB's mouth.
Also said it was a football decision and then, which is rare for him, reiterated it to the same reporter when he asked the follow up. He hardly ever does that either.
So believe him or not, he did address this more completely than he usually does. Still maybe not enough, but he'll never do that.
