Coaches,
Read some great posts on this subject in the older threads.
Now that I have a few minutes to actually read, what books would you recommend reading for motivating HS players?
We had problems in this area last year when I was an asst and I am vowing to not let this happen again to any team I am associated with.
Thanks, Lack

Some of my reads, in no particular order. I recommend them all to everyone involved in coaching, teaching, or administration.
"Wins, Losses, and Lessons: An Autobiography" by Lou Holtz (Great read!)
"Winning Every Day : The Game Plan for Success" by Lou Holtz (Got it for Christmas, it's great so far.)
"Heart of an Athlete" (FCA book)--great for players to read themselves or along with a coach. FCA also has a version for coaches, "Heart of a Coach", that I plan on buying soon.
"Finding a Way to Win: The Principles of Leadership, Teamwork, and Motivation" by Bill Parcells (I'm not a huge Parcells fan, but the book is excellent!)
"Championship Team Building: What Every Coach Needs to Know to Build a Motivated, Committed & Cohesive Team" by Jeff Janssen (Excellent read!!!)
"The Seven Secrets of Successful Coaches" by Jeff Janssen (Also excellent!)
"You Plan to Win the Game" by Herm Edwards (It's a leadership book really, but it deals with how a coach goes about being successful.)
"Lead or Get Off the Pot!" by Pat Croce (Again, meant to be more of a "leadership" book, but it's an excellent read and deals with motivation just as Edwards' does.)

Good to Great by Jim Collins. An excellant read for any leader or someone who wants to be a leader. One thing Collins research shows is that you need to spend less time trying to Motivate everyone, and make sure you are NOT De-motivating your best people.

I agree with Win, losses, and lessons...I just started it today and I can not put it down (except for the 20 minutes I have spent to check this website)

Lone Survivor- Story about a Navy Seal who survives an ambush in Afganistan and eventually gets rescued. Awesome stuff about their training, teamwork, and mental outlook with a never say die attitude. "I am always in the fight!"

I recommend this one to everyone and it has nothing to do with sports. "The Present" by Spencer Johnson, M.D. It has to do with living in the present moment.
Heres a little quote from the book.
"Yesterday is the past,
Tomorrow is the future,
Today is a gift and that is why they call it the present"
I have read this book a few times. It is only about 100 pages long so it takes no time to read.
