The age old debate. I know which kid I like to coach. But which one will I win with? As football coaches we often fail to practice what we preach. My starting JV RB skipped a practice (not the first time) th 9th game of the season so we benched him. He had a bad attitude on the sideline so we didn't dress him for the last game. We lost both games by 2 points. It was refreshing seeing his backup play with more heart than the starter ever had. But he had no breakaway speed and we lost games we probably would have won with the starter. You obviously know which kid works harder in the offseason. Honestly, I can't stand to coach that stud anymore. Both will be competing for the same job on varsity this year. Any thoughts?

We got to remember that we work with kids and they are gonna make mistakes. I know I sure did. So with the kids we are working with its not always a lack of character but kids growing up.
You did the right thing for benching the kid. But you need to tell him he has a "blank slate" now, and you need to give him another chance. If he continues to be a jerk next year after the first time meet with his parents and tell them if this keeps up hes gone. He does it again.- Bye!!! That is being fair in my opinion, but I dont know him or your situation.

He has seen that his poor attitude will not be tolerated by you and the staff. Sit him down and let him know that you want him to be able to contribute to the team (in games) but whether he does or not is totally up to him. Do the things that you ask of everyone and then good things will come his way. Good Luck!

Well, so far everyone that has had TO has let him go. He hasnt won a super bowl for anyone yet. Since the NFC sucks this year the Cowboys would have made the playoffs without him anyway. But he isn't really the point. How many chances does a 16 yr old get when his antics are hurting the team?

I've always thought you can win a few games for a few seasons with talent. Good character and hard work will build you a successful program for many, many years. Now add in some good character talent every now and then and you get special teams.

I'll take class and character ANYTIME! ANYDAY! I once even had a coach tell me,"Never cut a great athlete because of his attitude." I couldn't disagree more!

The Packers drafted a WR named Greg Jennings this year. A somewhat unknown guy with average NFL athletic ability...but, he's very intelligent and has top notch character.
He's having a good season. He is a solid player, and could possibly develop into a solid #1 WR.
I'll take him any day over T.O. or Randy Moss. (the two extreme's I know)
Now...a little less on the extreme side. Chad Johnson vs. Greg Jennings. Tough call.
I think you'd have to give a player a rating, from 1-10 on character and talent. And then only take guys that add up to a 15 or more.
Someone with 10 talent and 1 character? No thanks...someone with 10 talent and 5 character? Hmmm...tough to pass on.

it depends what level I am at. If I am at the pro level, my job is to win games(not saying I agree with this) so this is why they put up with malcontents, misfits, rapists, child molestors, criminals and thugs.
I could neve coach at the d 1a level cause I could not sell my sole inthe recruiting process. it to has become a business at the 1a level. 1 aa level is what 1a was 20 or 30 yrs ago.
High School is about developing the total person or at least that is what the school philosophy ususally says.
me personally I am a Navy Acad. guy. no offense Army guys I respect you as well. If the world was run at the Army and Navy Acad and toss in Air Force we would not see college athletes on the front pages very offen.
Character counts at these institutions. Even Northwestern where they have some of the highest standards in the land, character counts.
give me 11 rudys and I will find away to win a state championship every now and again. people with character do not let their grades go bad or get picked up for drinking or get into school problems. they generally are the coachable kids wtih the best parents.
