HC in five different schools in five different states. Four of the schools did not have washers or dryers (not even for the custodians). Only two schools (both in Texas) had washers and dryers. In two of the schools we had the team take all of their clothing (practice and game) home to get cleaned. One of the schools we had an outside group clean the game uniforms, and had the players clean their practice clothing.
In one of the Texas schools we had three industrial sized washers and two industrial sized dryers. Practice gear was washed and dried every Tuesday and Thursday by the assistant coaches, and the assistant coaches took turns getting the uniforms washed and dried on game nights. We all came in early on Saturday AM's to put the uniforms away before meeting as a staff.
In the other Texas school I had only one industrial sized washer, and one industrial sized dryer. I was the only coach on staff. I told the team moms I would not have the time to wash practice gear so they volunteered to come in on Tuesdays and Thursdays to get that stuff clean. Bless their hearts. I threw the game jerseys in the wash on Friday nights, and came in early on Saturday AM to throw the jerseys in the dryer, and the game pants (belts) in the wash. When the boys came in on Saturday AM's they would watch film, then put the uniforms away before getting their light workout done. The players took their socks and undergarments home on Friday nights to be washed.

I can’t believe there are places that have kids wash their own stuff. I’ve never seen that before. We wash and distribute everything. I wash workout clothes too.

I wrote it earlier, and I'll write it again; I am the opposite and am shocked how many do laundry for their players. Now I see why there are so many posts complaining about how much time coaching takes up; I'd feel the same way too if I were wasting my time washing clothes for kids. I've coached MS ball had the kids take their stuff home and wash it and had zero incidences; let alone the years in high school.

But let’s say that there is some problems. Three practcie uni’s and three game jerseys trashed or lost or whatever. Bill the players. Hold the report card until they pay. Ok, let’s say they can’t pay. Make them sell more ads or whatever. Ok, say you never recover the money. That is $600. Heck make it $1000. That is still less than you are spending as a team on coaches man-hours, detergent, and washer and dryer wear.

We coaches do it for a week at a time, laundry and lock up duty. Everyone ends up having it twice if we go all the way to the finals.
2 quad load washers, 2 quad load dryers. CTeam and JV/Varsity is about 130-140 kids. Days we wear pants, it takes about 6 loads to get everything washed. Kids put stuff on a nylon strap and throw it in the bin. CTeam usually gets their's in first and by the time you get off the field, have any meeting/deal with stuff their wash is ready to flip. Wash takes about 1 hour, dry is less.
We get the wash started, whomever comes in first in the morning flips the wash to finish drying. We have a special needs class that comes down and they sort the wash and hang the loops on the lockers.
On Friday night usually we all help get the wash in. We'll soak if we need to soak and treat if necessary. Some coaches will stay late and just finish it up, some come back on Saturday and finish. I live 6 minutes from the school so I'll swing by as often as needed to on my turns. I also have a standing offer for the coaches that are further out that I'll come and flip the wash if they need me.
We wash every day, all year long.

I am amazed how many of you have the kids do all their own wash. I never had to wash any of my gear in HS as a player. Coach/manager washed all our practice (every day for under garments-once a week unless it rained for Jersey and pants) and game gear.
School I’m at now we wash for the kids. I tell them every day if they put it in front of the washer I’ll wash it. I start the load when I leave and throw it in dryer next morning. Games nights all coaches stick around and wash and hang up uniforms.

I'm at a small 3A school in North Carolina. We wash all of the team issued gear ourselves. We have one washer and one dryer so most of the time after the jv play Thursday and varsity play Friday it takes a couple of days to get everything washed, dried and put away.

I wonder if there is some regional difference here?

We wash it at the end of the season equipment collection but they wash it during the season.
We’ve never had any issues with it.

Kids (or, more likely, one of their parents) do everything. I'd like to say they wash their practice stuff every night, but that's pretty much never the case. If we let them, some of them would go weeks without taking their practice jerseys home to wash; which is a reminder to me that we have to be more on top of that situation, instead of waiting for the locker room to start to stink.

Heck at one school we even provided towels and washed them every day. Try taking a load of wet towels out of the wash. Wears you out.

When I was in high school we got new uniforms and the HC told us, "After games you will leave your uni's here and we will wash them, we can't take the chance that your mothers will ruin them." After the first game the coach collected them all and did the wash. He used the wrong chemical and destroyed them, we had to go back to using the old crappers. Ha!
The programs I've been at the kids handle practice and the school (read - somebody the coach pays) handles game uniforms. The away uni's are white and cleaning them is a terrible job after playing on a grass/dirt field. It's not uncommon for the person washing those white uni's to quit after one week.

Side note - my wife convinced to not have white game pants. Ours are navy. Great decision.

I washed all game gear and practice jerseys myself when I was a HC. Washer/Dryer in the locker room made it easy.
Game stuff because we don't dry it all the way, no fabric softener, powder only, stain spray on white parts, not washed with a red towel, etc.
Practice jersey was on Thur: they drop it in themselves, I would start the wash that night, in the AM on Fri I would move to the dryer. Pretty simple with it all in the room already. We didn't wear practice pants there.
Game stuff we would start Fri night, I would finish Sat while tagging film. All done 9-11am or it was done Mon morning.Sat noon - Mon 7:15am was MY TIME.

I don't enjoy doing my laundry. Add in a wife and kids, we have a load to do everyday, 365 days a year.
Wash 100+ football player practice / game jerseys / pants? No thanks.
That being said, we are not in the best socio-economic class and have never had problems. We offer up the help, havn't had anyone take us up on it. The players seem to figure out how to have jerseys that smell good so their girlfriend(s) can wear them on game day!

I coached at a private school that got new uniforms. At the beginning of the season the HC had every kid pay a $100 uniform cleaning fee which was to cover the entire season's uniform cleaning. There were 42 kids on the team, so $4,200. He asked all of the staff who wanted to clean the uni's, said they could keep the $4,200. One guy that was lazy, always broke and always seemed to be out of work jumped at the job.
First game of the season was an away game played on a terrible grass/dirt field in the high desert. After the game the HC put all the uni's into trash bags, cinched them up and gave them to the Lenny laundry guy. Lenny went home and put all the bags into his garage and left them there until Thursday when the HC said at practice, "Where's the uniforms? We were going to give them out after practice?" Lenny got a panicked look on his face and said, "I'm still working on them." HC was pissed, he knew something was up. Lenny made an excuse to leave practice early and went home to work on the uni's. His wife called the HC and said, "Lenny can't finish washing the uniforms, he just took them out of the bag and the smell makes him throw up. You will have to come get them, they are on the side of our house." The HC went over and got them and had his own wife do the washing which, as you can imagine was pretty bad since they were sitting in plastic trash bags in a hot garage for a week. Lenny was an old high school buddy of the HC and it ruined their friendship. Lenny had already blown all the money and wouldn't give it back, he never even came back to the school.

Last HC I worked for would stay at the office until 7AM after a game washing laundry that night before stains would set in. He wouldn't let anyone else do it. At other places, assistants would take turns doing it. I've only been fortunate enough to work in a place one time where a manager did the laundry. Ironically, that was the poorest program, but we had a volunteer who did it. Best setup we ever had was a school where a custodian did the game unis. Best part was that not only didn't the coaches have to do it, we COULDN"T do it. The machine required a code and only she had it. Same with us. I am at a pretty large school for our area (1800 kids-ish) and a lot of them are out for sports. With the cost of uniforms and how many events we have per week we have a custodian do it for us. They trust her a lot more than they trust us.

I am the self contained ESE teacher. Football pays us $600.00 to wash game jerseys.
It is a win/win for me!

We have a coach that handles equipment uniform practice set up and film. He recruits the really nice kids who stick it out freshman year but don't find football for them. Usually they are really nice kids, smart, or maybe a little awkward. They like hanging out but football just isn't for them. He does a good job making them feel like they can contribute in other ways. They help him with all that stuff. They get out of school early on game days, he gets them a little gear, and we all make sure they get fed or get playoff gear and stuff like that. Our HC thinks it's so important to efficiency that he uses our last stipend on it so that means one less coach on the field. He is a teacher and still coaches in the locker room. Our HC is probably right we all couldn't coach as much if we had to take care of the 100 plus unis and gear. Our kids have very little so it's not getting done at home and if it went home it ain't always coming back.
