How does everyone deal with necessary strategies and adjustments? We typically get ~15 minutes at halftime to talk amongst one another and the players.
I ask because our staff is looking to maximize our opportunities in-game as well as at halftime.

We have Hudl Sideline and an Endzone cam, so most adjustments are now made on the fly. Halftime is how we reiterate all of the adjustments we've already made, but in a calmer, quieter setting. Kids get to ask questions about adjustments. After that, its just our "state of the team" HC talk.... attitudes, motivating chit, that kind of stuff

For us, halftime starts with the coaches getting together. Offensive guys/defensive guys, then we come together. We then talk with the kids in a calm manner. Since we have kids play both ways, we only have about 7-8 minutes to talk on each side of the ball. Then the HC gives a final comment, and we're on the field. We are a formation check defense. The reason that I mention this is that we feel if we have done our homework, we won't have a lot of adjustments to make at halftime. The guy in the box charts what the opponent is doing and tells me each series. At halftime he gives me a more detailed picture. The big adjustment at halftime occurs if we are getting hurt by a formation/play or if we see something we have not seen in scouting film.Sometimes the adjustment is simply "keep doing what you're doing", or we might eliminate or change one of our calls. One thing for sure, we will not reinvent the wheel at halftime.

Adjust around your best players. We were much more successful at halftime adjusting when we took our 3 or 4 best defensive players and made the adjustment based around their abilities. We tried to simplify things for everyone, but if there was some kind of major change (adjusting an alignment, how we called a strength, fixing/adding a stunt) then we made sure that our best players were the ones shouldering that load because they could handle it.

This is one of the things I feel like I need to get better at. I feel like I am always a step behind in adjusting. The first thing I always try to do if the game plan isn’t working is fix what we are doing wrong to get the game plan to work. By the time I do that and it doesn’t work again I feel like I’ve waited too long. We have HUDL sideline so I use that and the white board on the sideline. Whether we make major adjustments on the sideline or at the half depends on the year. Some years we are 2 platoon or nearly 2 platoon so I can make some bigger adjustments on the sideline. Years we have key players going both ways it’s nearly impossible and we have to wait till half. Most of the assistant I’ve had are mainly yes men. So adjustments are just me telling them and then the kids what we are gonna do different. I usually inform the HC what I wanna do on the way off the field. Go over it with the assistants. Then go over it with the kids. If I have time I then have the kids go to their coach and have that coach go over it with their position group specifically.

1. Whole team gathers for a quick message from the head coach. Coaches go into office to sort stuff out. 2. O and D split into separate rooms or areas and we go over what we need to go over. 3. Whole team comes back together for another quick message from the head coach and we head back to the field.
If there is a need to talk about special teams I do that either immediately after the head coach talks, or right before he wraps us up and we go back out.

IMHO, this is where games are won and lost when the talent level is close to equal. In about 75% of high school games talent is not equal, but when it is the team that can make and execute the best adjustments wins. Execution is the biggest part. Most guys have the knowledge to make adjustments, but having players that can understand them and carry them out is the hardest part
