It amazes me how much difference there is in terminology that is used across the country and how many words/ concepts/ movements are the same but called completely different. Someone industrious needs to start and online dictionary/thesaurus of football terms used across the country and across the ponds with search capability. Will have to be someone with ALOT of time!!
Maybe someone has started one??

Impossible task because subject is too broad and what I call "Fire" somebody else might call "Plug," what I call "Cover 4" somebody else calls "Cover 8," etc.

IMO Offense is fairly universal.
Learn TCU or Saban for defense.

Kinda what I figured. It just amazes me how terminology varies from area to area.

I've never had a problem with football argot. All professions have a language which is spoken and understood among its members.
Except for "Inside Sally"!
I maintain its a Naked Reverse!

One man's "Force" is another man's "Contain". My 7 tech may be your 6I.

That would be my normal reaction..but if we have coaches here typing that the _____ defense beats the _____ offense, and coaches here that basically talk down to hall of fame coaches because they don't know what "solo/palms/special/blue rip/liz/ mable" means... why not...

It would be cool if a wiki-like football dictionary was created where anyone reading could modify a post/definition.

One of the most liberating experiences was talking to one of my mentors about pass combos and I asked him what one in particular was called and his response was "I don't care what you call it."
I've made it a point to rethink what names we give things and why from then on; formations, positions, personnel groups, plays, tags, etc.
When talking to others, there are ways to "translate" what we do, but I like having terminology unique to our program for a number of reasons.

It's kind of an insanely difficult task. I should update this post with more concepts, but there's really no end to it. There are also always subtle changes, nuances, etc., and similar to the thoughts on this thread often I'd rather just describe the thing than use the jargon for it.
