Does anyone use players to breakdown film?
I was thinking last night about how do we know what our players really know. Then I thought what if we used players for our film breakdown.
Let's say in HUDL:
The QB has to break down the coverage portion of the game. This would let us know as coaches if he is seeing what we are seeing. The offensive line could breakdown the box. Is it 4-2, 4-1, etc. That would let us know if they are seeing what we are seeing. The DBs could breakdown route combos.
I didn't think out what every position group would breakdown, but I think it could be beneficial. The coaches obviously would have to go through and watch the same film because they would need to break it down but they also would need to check to see that the players had input the right information.
Just wondering if anyone has done anything like this...

I think that you would be better served to come up with a question set for every position group that has points of emphasis that you want them to see. Then you could assign it to them individually and have them turn it in.
If you have them break it down in hudl for a position group how do you know that it's not just one guy doing all the work? I do realize that they could do the same with the question set that I described earlier, however, you could always assign different questions to specific players if that becomes a problem.

You must get better trade film than we do. Hard to tell the coverage when the film guy (or kid) follows the ball in the air or zooms in on just the center or as one of our coaches says looks like they have delirium tremors.
Honestly as many have said before the more stuff you "assign" kids the more it starts to feel like school or a job and the less interested they probably become. Sure you are better off making 5-10 clips up of different fronts/coverage/favorite routes and posting that on hudl.

Also good point about not making it into a job feeling.

That would probably be beneficial, but I'd rather give the players the weekend off besides watching film. I'm sure our numbers would drop if we had them tag film.

I can't imagine a HS kid doing something like that.

We have a hard enough time getting them to read scouting reports.

Yes, I am quickly realizing that it may help to check if they are seeing things through a coach's perspective, but definitely way more negatives than positives. I also hate tagging film. Maybe my subconscious was looking for a way out.

Do any of you guys have a list of questions that you want each position set to know? IE questions for the Lineman both OL and DL, same for WR/DB, QB? If so would you mind sharing?

probably would be better off having them send you 3 clips of man coverage/outside pressure/toss sweep/etc...

I've had football players as my T.A.'s in past years. I've used them to tag O/D/K, down, distance, hash, yl, and run/pass. This would be for future opponents when we received film ahead of time and it was very beneficial. Those were all good kids and they preferred plugging in football data over stapling grammar packets and grading quizzes.

Something like this makes sense but asking kids to tag plays, etc. on their own time would be too much.

I also hate tagging film..we use Hudl Assist Is it accurate? Do you feel it's worth it? Absolutely. The way that I look at it is that it costs about $1000 a year. If you were able to pay an assistant $1000 to do that, wouldn't you?

We use Hudl Assist sometimes. Next year I think we are budgeting for it every week. Huge time saver. As for using players I would rather do it myself and keep it consistent. I think it would be unfair to ask our players to do it. We have 12 guys on staff.

Tagging is a drag, but honestly, its to the point I can just get my prep work done by doing it. "Hire a young coach" or dump it on the kids is inviting, but there's really nothing more important on a weekly basis than the inputting of data.

And also to see if they are seeing things they way you are teaching them to see it. I definitely wouldn't be comfortable with them doing it to lighten the load of coaches.
