Hello all. I'm looking for opinions on what coaches think are the best footballs for high school, especially in wet weather. Our previous coach used Wilson GST and once they got wet they were awful. thanks Greg

Hello all. I'm looking for opinions on what coaches think are the best footballs for high school, especially in wet weather. Our previous coach used Wilson GST and once they got wet they were awful. thanks Greg Wet GSTs are bad I agree. Also for how expensive they are they do not seem to wear well. Just my opinion though. I know lots of teams use them. Through a little trial and error I decided on the Baden Lexum compostite ball. Sticky as fly paper out of the box, and it retains it well. You can dry it off pretty good. If it is really wet out we just use a rubber ball.

What ball is good for a QB with small hands? Have not used it, but I have been told the VR5...the 5 panel ball is good for QBs with small hands. But my QBs have a variety of hand sizes and the Baden seems to be fine.

We have used the Baden and it did work well. Southern Florida gets a litte bit of rain.

I purchased just one VR5 for this upcoming year. Interested to see how it works. Anyone out there use them.

We go with the GST, but I agree when it's wet or even dirty, it is very slick. Kind of sucky for a $60+ dollar ball. We don't have another ball we use since we are required to use the GST in the playoffs. So we just use the GST all season and get used to it.

We have used the Rawlings ST5 for six years and are very pleased with it. It's not as round (fat?) as the Wilson 1001 or 1005 so it grips better (QBs with small hands may find it beneficial). Handles bad weather as well as or better than any leather ball I know, and it's less expensive.
Also, our JV and freshmen teams started using the ST5 composite ball last year (instead of rubber) and really like it. They wear very well and don't get as hard or slick as other comp balls when cold or wet.

What are the differences between leather and compsite? Why would you choose one or the other?

Leather is, well, leather; a composite ball is a synthetic blend of rubber and leather.
You use leather for varsity because they want to use a "real" football like the big boys (collegians and pros).
You use a composite ball because you want to balance the budget.

We use Rawlings ST-5... that's what the state uses in the playoffs/championship game here. Teams don't have to use the ST-5, but since the state sends 2 for each playoff game, I figure it's a way to stock upon the footballs we actually use. I don't care... I don't throw it (of course, neither does our QB).
You use a composite ball because you want to balance the budget.
... and you use a rubber ball (Voit) when you kick off. We don't do this any more... but we did when we played on astro-turf a lot. Crazy bounces... and yes, it's legal.
I always liked the Wilson 1001 that we used in college. Anyone still use those?

We need to balance the bugdet so we use the ST5 Composite. Use it from varsity to the pop warner kids in our program.

Before we switched to the GST, we used to use the Nike Taktician composite. It was a nice ball and our QB at the time could really throw the thing. And another thing, some of you use rubber balls? We can can only use footballs with the NFHS mark on them at all levels. (V,JV,Frosh) I guess rules differ everywhere......

I'm glad i asked the question. Everyones answers are great. We also can use a rubber football for kickoffs in the rain in connecticut. but we didn't do that last year, we just used a worn "GST" thats was better than rubber.
I heard that the NIKE 2000 were very good in wet weather, price dosen't seem to bad for a leather ball either. Greg

We used Wilson 1001 and 1005. QBs loved them. I really like the Nike 2000 too, may order a few of them this year too
