We are meeting weekly with our players. Our underclassmen will meet one day and graduating seniors will meet on another. We are looking to provide solid education (certainly recruiting process, etc), but also to provide guidance and information to those athletes that will not play at the next level. Obviously the info needed for underclassmen differs from that needed for graduating seniors, hence the separate days.
Does anyone have any information that you have shared that will be relevant to what we are looking to accomplish? Thanks

I would say: ACT testing dates Discuss gpa Class schedule, what do they actually need Point out there are alternatives to college, trade schools, vo-techs / technology centers , make more money more than likely learning something there any way. Social media awarensse/footprint Clearinghouse
Probably would be good to bring in the counselors too
I also have heard of teams doing "man" camps. They teach the team things like: Change a tire Check oil Check tire pressure How to do laundry Iron Fill out job apps Develop resumes
How to make an athletic resume Balancing a check book/bill paying
You know stuff they need to be productive citizens good fathers
I'm sure there is something I missed but these are some ideas

As said by someone else, teach them that trade schools exist. If I could go back, I'd go pipe welding without hesitation.

Obviously the info needed for underclassmen differs from that needed for graduating seniors, hence the separate days. Does anyone have any information that you have shared that will be relevant to what we are looking to accomplish? Thanks On December 1, 1987, the Board of Education submitted to the General Assembly of Virginia the publication Family Life Education: Board of Education’s Response to House Bill No. 1413. This publication identified regulations for implementing ageappropriate, sequential, and comprehensive Family Life Education (FLE) for all students attending public schools in Virginia. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) 2004 requires students to participate in the general education curriculum. The state regulations identify eleven content areas that must be included in the Family Life Education curriculum. The content areas are as follows: 1. Family living and community relationships; 2. The value of postponing sexual activity until marriage (abstinence education); 3. Human sexuality; 4. Human reproduction and contraception, including the benefits of adoptions as a positive choice in the event of an unwanted pregnancy; 5. The etiology, prevention, and effects of sexually transmitted diseases; 6. Stress management and resistance to peer pressure; 7. Development of positive self-concepts and respect for others, including people of other races, religions, or origins; 8. Parenting skills; 9. Substance abuse; 10. Child abuse; and 11. Prevention of sexual assault and, in the event of sexual assault, the importance of receiving immediate medical attention and advice, knowledge of the requirements of the law, and use of resources such as counseling and legal services

I have been on programs that did similar things, it became a big waste of time and kids grew to resent it and started blocking out the coach. I am not writing that yours will be, but just beware of oversaturating them with your voice so that you eventually become just constant background noise (and are not listened to when you have something more important to say). Words are like money, the more you say the less they are worth.
I think the part where you meet with seniors who want to go play at the next level can be beneficial, as this is the area being directly related to coaching; but having sophomores come in once a week for life skills will just become a chore to them. I would definitely make it optional and have an open mind to when kids don't want to give up their free time to be lectured at.

Previous staff I was on, every Thursday, during the season after practice we did a quick 5-20 min character building lesson. The head coach did the first 3, and an assistant was assigned a week later in the season. Most of us showed a quick video, something motivational or on somebody that overcame odds, or even a movie clip. Every now and then a guest speaker. I thought it was good. BUT it was short and sweet (like u said less is more) after a 40 min Thursday practice. And then we went to the booster club team Meal somewhere in town. I would do something like once a month, and see if anyone wanted to volunteerly come in once a week. This might help get the message across better. Just a once a Month breakfast with a quick 5-7 min talk would work.

Now, you could program factory welding machines, but I like making apps and games. I just hope one day 2k gets their heads out of their assess, and realize that a generic football game with editable teams, players, stadiums, divisions, etc. is NOT illegal. I'd put my application in the day they decided to do that. Within a few days, geeks like me would remake the NFL from those generic sets. I still have the urge to learn welding, but currently learning motorcycle repair first. Another fun trade skill.

Temporarily struggling with money doesn't mean I always have. Have done programming for years now. Recently, freelance, though. Currently a car salesman, but do programming on the side.

Novel idea: teach the kids how to lift weights and work their butts off. Do speed and agility drills and stuff like that. Be a coach. Change a tire... Smh!

A little harsh but I get what you are saying. Often, it seems that a lot of guys have this idea about being some kind of Hollywood version of a coach who imparts profound wisdom or teaches crucial life skills on young people. While that might be needed in some places, I think it is ok to just be a football coach, too. Show up on time, don't take a lot of sick days, don't let your private life become public, pay your bills, don't be creepy around women, make a point of being down in the weight room with the kids a couple times a week...for a lot of guys, this list would be asking a lot! 😂
