A few of my personal favorite
female coach talking about the AD: "coach _____ is a great man...he really rides me hard but he makes me better"
male girls basketball coach talking about his team - 'they sure weren't very talented (puts his hands up an mimics milking a cow) but I milked them for all they were worth'
retiring coach talking about that years JV who was 0-10 - "these guys might have been small, but man were they slow too, If I had to choose between this group and some of the others I've had in my career, I'd take the others"
freshman basketball guy talking about his team - "these guys didn't win many, but they showed up everyday and kept working, and learned one of the big lessons in life, so much of it is just about showing up" ...he then calls the team up to get their certificates and only 2 showed up to the banquet
backstory for this one...we had one kid quality for state in power lifting who got 2nd place. The powerlifting coach couldn't drive him to the state tournament for some reason so they just got this young football assistant to take him there, it was a few hours away....so at the banquet the power lifting coach wasn't there, so they asked this dude to speak for the powerlifter....keep in mind..he did not coach power lifting at all...anyway..this was his story:
"so as I was driving Jimmy up to the state meet, I asked him..how much can you lift? and he told me how much he had done in the past....so then I told him....let's see if you can't do more than that....and he did...he did more than he ever had before!"
