I know this is not the norm, but . . . I was watching the show Varsity Inc. on ESPN about the West Monroe (LA.) Rebels. It is a show similar to Two a Days w/o the drama MTV has infused into their programming and has become known for (does anyone else remember when MTV was just videos). Anyway, they were playing a team called Rostrun I think and the coach was going over why the other team was going to give them a game and one of his points was that if they won the game, the other coach would get a $25,000 bonus. My first question would be to the Louisiana guys, what the heck was this bonus for - Lifetime Achievement, Number of Wins, Just Beating that team . . . Secondly, is this common practice around the country? By extension, how many guys on this board are a paid HS employee whose only responsibility it is to coach football and win games? Even if there is another title such as Field Manager, but the expressed intention is that is the FB coach's job title and the next coach will have the same job.

We usually get a ham sandwich, a bag of chips, and a bottle of water after our games.
The ham sandwiches are really good.

I sorta wondered the same thing when the coach at Hoover got in trouble this year. If something like that happened here in KY the guy woudl be gone period and not recieve anything like the deal he did.

Hey Guys, The comment made by the coach was made in good humor. I coach in the same area as West Monroe and both coaches have known each other a long time and are very good friends. Every coach around here got a big laugh about it.

bonuses/incentives are illegal in texas public high schools. a coach cannot be rewarded monetarily (or otherwise) for winning a game, championship, reaching a certain win total or anything performance based. this includes receiving compensation from a booster club. does it happen? i'm not at liberty to say but i would think that if it did then why would you let it be known? in louisiana, i do not know their regulations so it must be legal -- or the guy was simply trying to motivate his kids (not sure how MY financial gain would motivate my players, though).

We're definitely in the lower circle of coaching. We get a bottle of water and two cookies. Of course, I only take one! Here's the kicker.....we get them even if we lose the game!

A coach on our staff used to coach in so cal. Each coach received $100 to his stipend every week they coached in the playoffs. Maybe that was just his school/district. I'm not trying to say what happens everywhere in so cal., just sharing his experience.

We get 2 turkey or ham sandwiches, chips, a cookie, and a sports drink. We have to have the sports drink because the sandwiches are so dry that we would get cramps without rehydrating.

Here in Louisiana at some schools you do get incentive bonuses. Jackson parish gets paid something like $150/wk you are in the play-offs for Asst. coach and $300 for HC. This is not everywhere in LA but some areas it happens and is done through the school board.

In almost every movie or show you see about high school football the HC only coaches football and thats it. Is there really a school that pays just to coach? PS I hope you got the right kind of little debbie snack I would hate to see someone get fired over the wrong snack cake.

Sorry--they're hamburger and potato baked into a hard roll kind of thing. You can bake 'em in the morning, wrap 'em in tin foil, and eat them later in the day. Old food for miners.

I coach in So Cal and for every extra week we play past the regular season (ie playoffs) we get an additional 10% of our stpend. More work more pay. The kicker is about 40% of the teams in So Cal make the playoffs.

Have not heard these mentioned in years and been many years since I've eaten them- my dad's family all worked the mines in Butte Mont. and pasties were a staple in the diet. Just seeing them talked about brings back many fond memories.

At the end of the year, I get a rice krispy treat made by one of the parents with writing on it that says, "Thanks coach". It's as hard as a rock, but I eat that {censored} thing. Every year.

Some districts I know of give extra pay for each week you are in the playoffs. It's not so much a bonus for winning as it is pay for working longer than everyone else.
I my state (SC) we do have some coaches that get paid quite well to just coach football year round. This is a district to district, school to school issue. We have a few that make in the 70's and 80, just to coach football. The head coach at the school in my state who has ranked in the USA Today Top 25 consistantly for a few years now (I think they have won five out of seven state championships) was teaching one class and getting in the 80's, no A.D., just football and one class. He left for a college job last year.
