I resigned from my HC job last spring after having some great success at my school. Wife and I are having #2 and needed to help out more. Just accepted a new teaching position at a very good football school. Very excited to get back after a year off. The schools couldn't be anymore different. My current school, very little talent exclusively option. The new school packed with skill talent spread. This one will be interesting. Moving back into an assistant role will be different. Any guys out there make the transition from HC to position coach. Advice?

Be the kind of assistant you wanted when you were the boss:
Put in all the necessary time and then some.
Work to make your position group the best on the field.
Help with the equipment.
Be in the weight room.
Don't give advice unless asked for it.
Don't begin a sentence with "When I was header..."
Congrats, and good luck!

PS, The best part of this thread is the Bob Seger horn in the back ground.

Be cooperative. Be humble.
Your boss knows you were HC. He's thinking he has a great talent with you on the team.
A coaching staff is also a team. Don't pass up this opportunity.

We did throwing camps with them, and the JV kids were an awesome group of guys. They seemed coachable, and really eager to learn. They truly seemed to LOVE football. You are definitely joining an up and coming program in the state. Having come from a similar type of school to where I am now, enjoy the ride.

Bruh... You will have so much extra time on your hands. It will blow your mind at first. Be the assistant you wanted. Be an example and mentor to the young gun coaches.
Before you know it you will be hearing that Bob Seger horn and you'll be a HC somewhere else...

Thanks guys. I really am excited for the change coming up. I think this will be a great opportunity to grow my football knowledge being in a new system. Years ago I created a football manual that contained assistant coaches roles and responsibilities. Its time for me to fulfill those jobs/responsibilities.

On a long and lonesome highway, East of Omaha...
Be as helpful as you can. Being an assistant to a quality HC is very liberating and can re-enthuse you for your next opportunity. If the guy isn’t quality, analyze why-to yourself, not publicly- make notes and learn why for your next gig.

Any guys out there make the transition from HC to position coach. Advice? a year ago in the spring l i transitioned back to an asst role, was going to do RB and help a 1st year head guy get his feet wet. he knew i had some time in the big boy chair and wanted to really lean on me to help. fall practice rolls around and the DC had to take a leave, he asked me to be the DC. hadnt done Defense in a long time. but being a HC and OC for so many years, I know what gives me fits. so i jumped at it. had a great year and i think i took alot off his plate. moved on after the season, we both did actually. new school back to OC was fun year and got to really do some good things, teaching kids to play ball and not worry so much about all the BS that is in being a HC. im telling you now, the best job in HS football is a coordinator role. your the head coach of your unit. if the HC is someone who will let you do what you want, its by far the most enjoyable job out there. none of the BS HC duties, and you know that list is endless..... have fun, when he asks, give your advice-right, wrong or indifferent- be the guy you wanted on your own staff, that will argue with you in the office and get on the board and yell and cuss n spit, but is your go to guy on the field to get stuff done.. enjoy it!!!

I went from being a coordinator to being a position coach before the 2016 season. After being a coordinator for most of the last 15 years, I have enjoyed the step back from coordinating to learn a new way of doing things. I work with a great young OC and a first time head coach who is tremendous. I am enjoying my time focused on one position group and building relationships with my guys. Coaching offensive line has helped me enormously to see the what the guys up front face on a daily basis. I don't have a timeline for getting back into a coordinator or head coach role, as I am focused developing a tough, physical, and smart offensive line. Make the most of the opportunity and soak up as much as you can.
