Coaches,
Dose anyone change their practice routines up for the playoffs? If so how and why?
Does anyone keep their practice routine from the beginning of the season all the way through? If so why?
I'm just curious to the way different coaches approach practice planing for the playoffs.
Thanks in advance.

Why change anything?
What you did got you where you are.

The only thing that would cause me to change would be bad weather.

When you change things they take is a meaning something, whether you do or not. Shortening practice may mean, to them, that you're overconfident or that you don't have a chance.

We bring everyone up for the playoffs Freshmen and JV. When Varsity is on defense the Freshmen and JV are working fundamentals and learning to run the scout team offense. Not all will be able to run the offense because of ability. Then when Varsity goes to Offense the Freshmen and jV go to defense and work fundamentals and learn the scout defense.
The reason we do this is because it gives us extra practice with these sub varsity players. Last year they had 5 extra weeks of practice. Result is that Varsity went 9-1 with an opportunity at a deep play-off run and JV went 10-0.

Cut time, cut contact, but that is about it.

More or less the same. By about week 6 or 7 we started trimming practice a little, but haven't changed anything since the end of the regular season. We brought up about half of the JV team so they run scout and we get a few more varsity guys reps for injury insurance.

We may cut back on contact but this really depends on the season. We'd love to be able to cut back on tackling and shedding sessions but that isn't going to happen if we haven't nailed those down completely. We'd hope that we would have dialed back on those a long time ago (especially seeing as we made the play-offs) but there have been years where we still struggled in these areas so they were an emphasis throughout the post-season.

We give a little more attention to specials as we head into playoffs.

We actually make practice longer...... for the scout team/JV guys. After practice is over, the varsity heads in and we usually do something with just them with an eye on next year. Scrimmage 7 on 7 Inside Spider drill 1 on 1s Goal line
usually lasts about 20-30 minutes tops. Let's the varsity coaches have a chance to coach the young guys up close and do a little 'hootin and hollerin"

I'm just curious to the way different coaches approach practice planing for the playoffs. Thanks in advance. Since we bring up quite a few jv players, we're able to run two scout offenses for our defense. This really increased the tempo of our practice which increased the quality of our practice. During the season, we could only run one scout team at a time and this dragged the tempo way down. But we didn't change our format really. You also have to think about which day you play. We usually play Fridays. Our game this week is on Saturday. That will change things as well.

We work a ton of fundamentals in individual and have 7 on 7, inside, and team. Basically, we run it like a varsity practice during the season. The offensive coaches will do the same when we (defensive coaches) have the varsity. That's is what's good about bringing all our kids up, Freshman and JV, for the playoffs. In Texas if you make it to the state finals you're practicing 6 extra weeks. That's 6 weeks of football skills develop that will help us next year.

Our basketball coach is all fired up about us winning the district title and told the BB kids not to worry about BB until the playoffs are over. He supports FB 100%. That and powerlifting is the only winter sport we have going on. All of the powerlifters are football players. (Btw, our basketball team is going into the season ranked #2 in the state. He has 3 starters on the FB team.)

Some of the JV kids will move up and contribute on KO or KO return. We gave the Freshmen a choice and they chose to stay out with football. The one's that will play basketball will have an opportunity to try out when football is over. Right now they are only running with 2 teams. When football is over they will have 3 teams, F, JV, V. It's the same for Track and Baseball when Basketball makes a deep run. They will suit up 20 kids for playoffs. All but maybe 5 play a Spring sport. Their season hasn't ended until late March the last 2 years.

We always preface the pull up with the option to go to basketball/wrestling. We carrot that if you leave you don't get a ring, but we don't force them. Almost every kid that is an athlete/player that is pulled up, is also duel sport athlete. At most they lose 5 weeks, at least 1 weeks. Let's be real, the wrestling team isn't going to cut anyone. It's the basketball kids we're talking about. We're not going to beat a kid up who thinks he's the next XXX NBA player, but we do sell the principle idea that 5 guys are on the court at a time and there are 11 on the football field.

We cut the running a little. We cut the hitting a little. We pull up some freshmen and send the rest off to basketball or whatever.
