I just finished my first year as head coach at a new school. Our middle school has their football banquet coming up and I plan to speak to them about lifting, etc. What advice would you give in regards to what to say at the middle school banquet? I don't want to take up too much time, but I want to make my point. Thanks for any tips.

I would say just go an commend them on their season, their effort and their habits. Then switch gears to talk about how excited you are to get a chance to coach them and how hard you expect them to work the rest of the school year and into the next season.

I agree with olcoach53. Commend them about the season and then begin "but the work with the talent in here has just begun..." Point out that if they truly want to be an elite program they're going to have to lift and take care of business inside and outside of school and that you're truly blessed to be able to work with such a wonderful young group of men coming up.

I'd bring up (briefly) that they make sure to take care of their academics.
