We have 60 boys on the team including freshmen...and, we ha e had 14 concussions so far this season in week 4. This , is more then we ha e had in the last 3 years combined..we use proper concussion protocol. We do ha e a very young team this year and I suspect that some of this is due to the fact that we have e a number of boys who have played very little football....any advice

What do you mean you use "proper concussion protocol" ?

While we still have year to year variations, we have cut down our concussions with a combination of neck strengthening exercises, hydration and better tackling techniques. I feel like we are still hitting as much in practice, though the number of big impacts are reduced.
Hydration seems to be a big factor.

14 is an absurd number.
There's one of a few things going on: 1-you are teaching something wrong and they're getting concussed as a result. 2-whoever is doing the diagnosing is being extremely cautious 3-you're playing wayyyy above your talent level and getting crushed. 4-you aren't doing much to help prevent concussions in the weight room.
I don't think we have had a combined 14 at all 3 levels in a season.

You aren't even half way home on your season!

I think we've had 2? in the last 4 years at my current school. I agree with everything mariner42 said

Has something changed about the way you teach tackling or the way you fitted helmets at the beginning of the season??
I also agree hydration could be at least part of the problem.

Not saying it is impossible, but to me it feels like that number is outrageous. As long as you aren't telling guys to go helmet to helmet on every play, I would say that your guys are a little too scared about anything that could be called "resembling" a concussion, but also, whoever is doing the official diagnosis, is making it a point to excessively cover their @$$, in my opinion. That number just doesn't seem mathematically possible or realistic unless you are hitting them with baseball bats across the head regularly throughout the week. That's just me.
