Ok, here's the sad but true tale. D1 caliber player on our team has lots of interest and a couple of verbals (Nebraska, Utah, Utah State, couple others) before and during the season. Life is good, kid is going to get someome to pay for his college. Season goes on, he has a good/great season, all is well. All the attention went to his head so he didn't have backups for backups, put everything into a couple of out of state schools.
Now that the season has ended, he's finding that he is sliding down the depth charts on these schools as prep schools and early-out seniors are becoming available for spring ball. Where he was #1 at a couple of schools, he's now been told that he's #3 or lower.
So, the question is how do I help this kid market himself, quickly, to the schools? He is legit - 4.4 speed, 5'11, 190, 65 on Nike/SPARQ combine, presses 300+, hard hitter, etc. He's 1st team All-Metro (DB) here in the SF Bay area. No issues with discipline, excellent leader, great attitude, knows football. Grades and scores are sufficient to get him in.
He asked me to help last week and I'm already working on his highlight video and can make all the copies he needs. The kids are still out of school so the HC will probably be able to help a lot more than I can, but that won't be until next week.
So, any suggestions on how to late-season market a good player?

Highlight films to as many DIAA, DII, NAIA, and JUCOS ASAP. Send a sheet with his name, address, phone number, GPA and SAT if it is good. His height, weight, and postitions. Then send your HC's info so they can contact him if they like what they see.

Coach,
Your kid's case isn't all that uncommon. Unfortunately some coaches feel they need to keep kids on the hook and then when "better" options come about, they go different ways. I would suggest focusing on D1AA, DII, and NAIA, maybe JUCO, but that is a route the kid will have to want to take. Many D1AA, DII schools are in the heart of their recruiting season right now. Not many DII's in your area, but a lot of D1AA schools. IF the kid wants to stay close to home, then JUCO or D1AA is the best route. If he is willing to move, DII is a good route. I agree with the coach that said sent as many tapes out as possible. Send a letter with the tape highligting his abilities, character, leadership. If he was a solid D1 prospect, which based on your assessment he is, he could be a special player at the D1AA, DII level. The difference a lot of the time is he will play more at D1AA or DII level than D1. Can be a difference maker. If his heart is set on D1 and D1 only, he will probably have to go JUCO. Most D1 schools will have offered by now if they were interested. Just my 2 cents. Again, the best thing you can do is get the kid noticed by sending tapes. If you have any friends or friends of friends that know college coaches that will help. Most college coaches also have email addresses listed on the website. I would suggest sending an email to let them know the tape is coming, or call them directly to let them know tape is coming. I have talked with a lot of DII coaches and most everyone one of them are very approachable. With scholarship limitations, they often look into every lead, especially if someone comes to them. If you take the time to contact them personally, they will listen. If for some reason they do not, then it isn't the type of environment you would want your player going into anyway.

There are 7 D1's in CA that play football - Cal, USC, SJ State, Standford, Fresno State, UCLA, and SD State. There are 3 D1AA's Sac State, Univ San Diego, and Cal Poly. There are 2 D2 schools - UC Davis and Humbolt State. It is very late in the process, so you guys better get moving. CALL each of these schools and talk to the area recruiting coordinator. Just sending a highlight tape won't do much as they evaluate thousands of kids every year. If you can't get thru to the area coordinator, then call the position coach. USD and Sac State are both without HC's at this time, but they will still have someone to talk to. Don't wait to put a tape together. As the coach, call for the kid today. D1 schools only have about 21 scholarships to offer in any year. D1AA have about 15, and D2 schools have about 9. If he has not been offered yet, then you need to get busy . . . .
Forget about JC's at this time. He can enroll in the JC later and it doesn't matter when he enrolls. If he is the best player, he will play.

They are provisional 1AA now. Small college football on the west coast is hurting right now. (At least in D2). It depends on how far the kid wants to go. There are schools in Washington, Oregon, etc to consider as well.
