This isn't about political debate, just a simple question...I'm catching flak from some parents because we aren't always out on the field when the anthem is played by bands. I reached out to several coaches I know and they are all the same, rarely out in time for it. Is this common?

I can't remember a time I've been on the field when it was playing.
Parents/townies find a way to bitch about everything.
Last year was best year the schools had in like 10 years. People bitching about using having red practice/camp shorts. We are blue and red. The school song lists red before blue. People are losing their G.D. minds thinking we are changing the school colors.
Two years ago we had red practice/camp shorts. Nobody said a word.

They play ours right before kickoff so we are always out for it. Our mascot is the Braves so it's a tradition that they all hold their helmets up and sing "And the home of the BRAVES" along with our fans. So at home they always wait to play it until we are out.

We're always out there. One of my favorite moments in sports, from watching my father put his hand over his heart while watching a game on television, to Whitney Houston singing at the Super Bowl before Desert Storm. Still get goosebumps.

I think if you want your poll to match the way you framed your question then there should be an answer that reads, "Yes, but we don't make it a point."
In that most schools do the national anthem directly before kickoff, so by us simply being there for the kickoff we are out there for the anthem; even if we are not necessarily making it a point to be there for the anthem itself.

Yes, we make it a point. We often have veterans as honorary captains at our home games. We also teach our entire team how they line up on the sideline for the national anthem and how they are to stand/act during the national anthem.

It depends if we are home or away and if away if locker rooms are available and close. At home we are in our field house at time of the anthem last minute talk, ours takes awhile, we have Marines JROTC, our Lady Leathernecks Drill Team is 2 time defending National Champs, two of our managers are on the drill team. 4 of the JROTC walk out with 2 flags and 2 guards and march to midfield and present the flags then the anthem. Supposed to remain standing while they march out, anthrm, and until they are off the field, can take 10-12 minutes.
Away all of our regular season games are in town, and some don't provide visitor lockers or may provide but far from the field and we don't use unless weather concerns. So most away games we are on the field for the anthem

Have made it a point NOT to be out during the anthem for many, many years. Always the possibility that some kid would do something somebody didn't like (not political, long before any of that, just dumb stuff), so we have the band play it with about 10 minutes left and then we come out for the toss. If somebody doesn't like it, that's their problem--I'll catch a lot less grief for not being out there (never had any complaints) than I will about something some kid does. A coach in our area had to deal with this for weeks last year after some players knelt. Away games can be a little tougher, but usually there's some place you can be out of sight.

I agree here. I can't really recall a time where we were ever NOT out for it, but I don't think it was ever with a purpose that "we have to be out for the Anthem" but rather because of the timing of the anthem. I find it interesting that anthem timing is so varied across the country.

We will have anthem practice. We do it once. We line up on the sideline facing the flag and show the boys how to stand, hold their helmet etc.

Always out there with helmets off. We live in a very conservative area.
Traditionally, they play the anthem before team introductions and the coin toss.
At another school, we took flack from parents a few years ago when our seniors jumped the gun and ran out out through the tunnel before the anthem was over.
The ROTC teacher wanted to fight us and our AD went off about it. It was a mess.

As a purple heart veteran I insist that the team be on the field when the National Anthem is played. I'm not ashamed to say I have a handkerchief with me, too.

We've never been out for, simply because of timing.
However, a few years ago, the band apparently had an issue and was running way behind on stuff. So they had a single flute player go in the box and play it over the PA. We didn't know there was a delay, so we put the kids in the tunnel and start making out way to the sidelines. Then everyone stands, the flute starts, and we all realize it's not going to end well. About 15 seconds into the anthem, the smoke/fog starts rolling from the machine, our guys start yelling. And then run out. We tried our best to stop them, but they couldn't hear or see what was going on. They realized halfway out what was going on and froze.
It was an absolutely hilariously awkward moment. Luckily no one made an issue of it. Now we make sure to know if it's been played or not.

In our state the anthem is played about 5 minutes before game time so we are always on the field for it. I've never seen a team not out for the anthem.

I'll say that it's very rare that we're out there for the national anthem. In our conference and for the teams we play out of conference, it just works out that the anthem happens several minutes before we have to bring our guys back out of the locker room and get to the field. They do the coin toss before we go back in to the locker room, and just everything works so that once we come back out, we walk captains out to shake hands, and we play football. Just how it's done. Honestly, I think it's done this way because every team is different in the speed that they come back to the field after hitting the locker room for the last minute instructions. Some teams hit the field with 3 minutes left, some with 30 seconds left on the clock. I think what nobody wants is to see any team caught in the middle and looks bad for it, if that makes sense.
We have been out there at times, but these are special occasions that we know about in advance and prepare our guys to stand on this line and have their helmets under this arm, etc.

NO and I try NOT to be out there.
If I were at a different school I probably would be.
Earlier this year our cheerleaders knelled. The kids have that right. I know a lot of my players would have. My purple heart marine vet coach may have. So we are just never out there usually. We have been b4. But because our locker room is 10 feet for the endzone, we don't come out until 1 minute b4 kickoff.

We're always out there by nature of the schedule. It's warmups - go in - come back out - coin toss - anthem - kickoff. Pretty standard for our area.

Air Force community. Definitely are out there. One time band played the anthem before they were supposed to and we weren't out there. Heard about it big time.

How are some of you guys not out there? In Northern CA, we play the anthem immediately before kickoff. Is that not the case in your areas? We don't make it a point to be out there, we just have no choice.
