Do coaches who often talk in terms of "I did this, or "I beat so & so," raise red flags with anyone else? Some make it sound as if other coaches or players had nothing to do with their success.
Seems that football is as "we" as it gets.

pet peeve, drives me nuts!!! Our Admin hired a young guy to teach science for us last year and also to be our JV OC. He had coached at 3 different schools and coached JH and 9th grade over a 10 year period. So good experience, but did not want to work too hard. I knew we were in trouble on day one when he told the 10th graders "I have never had a loosing season as a coach and this year will be no different. If we have a loosing season, I just want you to know it will be your fault for not listening to me"
I damn near fell over and pissed myself when I heard this. The guy was a pain in the A$$ all year and not only did we let him go, but our principal non-renewed the guy.

pet peeve of mine too! I address this (oops, meant "we address") this in our staff pre-season meeing. Worse yet is the guy who is me-I when winning - but its the kids fault after a loss -- can't have it both ways can you?

With some of these guys, it's innocent enough as it's been picked up somewhere (perhaps subconsciously) and can be corrected.
However, with most of them, it's an ego thing and indicates they aren't "TEAM" guys and may even resent suggestions to change, making matters worse.
As jd related, a parting of the ways is likely. When interviewing assistant coaching candidates, I try to frame questions so that they elicit responses which will show if the applicant is a "we" or "me" guy.

teachers are this way. you often hear them refer to the classroom as my classroom, when it reality, it is the school districts room, the SD desk, books, and so on.
WE have several teachers which the district is moving to different schools or gradelevels at elementry. you would think this is a crime. I hear I am a first grade teacher when in reality you are a 1-5 teacher and can be moved at any time.
i think coaches some times refer to things as I did this or that, because they really did do this and that.
you would like peopel to be we people.

To here a coach say "me" or "I" makes that coach a complete hypocrite. I would bet that same coach that is always "me" and "I" to colleagues is the first to preach "TEAM, TEAM, TEAM" tohis kids. If you are successful at all it is only because there are a bunch of people all working hard for a common goal.

I am a "me" and "my" guy when it comes to classroom or team for sure...why? because its "me" that would get sued if "I" screw up. As far as coaching goes, I am guilty of saying "I did this" or "my team" "my program" (after all, I plan everything, not the players) etc. but I think its harmless because my players love me and I love them and they love being part of OUR program. I do think that its MY program until they INVEST SOMETHING into it. Only then do I aknowledge "our" investment. teachers are this way. you often hear them refer to the classroom as my classroom, when it reality, it is the school districts room, the SD desk, books, and so on. As a Head Coach, the end result is on MY Shoulders.
WE loose, its MY fault. We win, The TEAM did a Great job.
When Assistant Coaches or Players are raising hell around town, they come to ME.
Bottom line is, when something bad happens, they are going to point at ME. If the TEAM does well, Parents point to their kids, etc....everyone pats themselves on the back BLAH BLAH BLAH.
Knowing that I accept responsibility when things go down hill, the players, the community and the staff KNOW that it is MY program to lead or to screw it up. (It doesn't take long to find the disloyal coaches ...refer to piss poor coaches below)
Everyone knows the deal. The honorable coaches take reposiblity when things go to hell. They give others credit when great thinigs happen. The piss poor coaches are ME ME ME when things are good, and point fingers when they are bad.
SO to get to the point, if a guy is responsile for something (you have given him that responsibility...be it the Offensive line, the weight room, painting the field...what ever it may be), it's his. Let him put his name on it. If he screws it up, tear him a new one, take it from him, do what you have to do, BUT KNOW, and make sure the staff knows, that if you are the boss, it all comes down to YOU.
AND FOR GOD'S SAKE, REMEMBER, Its not about you, its about the kids!
Have a plan, coach them up, let them play, win the game, and let them enjoy it.
Thats all for now, Coach Jolly

Thats all for now, Coach Jolly the 51% rule. since the head coach hell will roll if we do not win. He has the say and the power. I heard a coach tell me this. coaching is like a business, those with the most control, have the most to lose. this is why owners of companies have a controling interest, ie the 51% RULE.
