I see that CA is finaly having state championship games but no playoffs? They are just selecting teams to play in what amounts to bowl games. I also think I read they only have three classes.
How many sections are there in CA and why couldn't they have all the section winners make a state playoff system?

10 sections. 47 section title winners. Only 6 teams played and they are picked worse than BCS style.
A lot of Californians believe this to be a cash cow for the CIF and not a true attempt at making a playoff system. The sections all don't align with how their schedules are, when they can start games, etc. Until there is an overhaul and continuity with some things CA will continue to be the only state without a state playoff.
There are a bunch of section title winning teams that were left out in the cold (41 to be exact). I bet they think they could compete, and win, the games played today. And the winners today will say they are state champions, but are they?

The problem in California is that there are about 1400 high schools and it takes about 11 hours to go top to bottom across the state. In our section alone there are over 700 high schools. I would guess that's more high schools than all but about 3 states. I agree it's just a moneymaker for the CIF. However, the best 3 or so scools in teh state are there but they're not in the same divisions.

Texas is a HUGE state with many (many) football playing schools and they have a state playoff.

I disagree with wingman. The state is big, but that has nothing to do with why there isn't a playoff.
It is because the sections aren't aligned. Some section finish earlier than others, some have week 0 games, some play 13 games for the title and others 14. There needs to be common ground with when the season starts.
There needs to be a decision on when the season starts, how many non league games are played to accomadate a true playoff, etc.
It can be done if people sat down and hammered things out. The bowl games are nice and fun, but it doesn't really mean somebody is a state champion in my mind. Even though that is what the games are pitched as....state championship games.

A shame that something can't be worked out. 47 section title winners. That is insane.
I am sure that a lot of the schools up North would love to try and prove themselves on the playing field against the "great" schools in Cal.

I am a Christian so please hear me out . I coach at a public school and I am not bashing private schools but guys, why dont they have thier own divisions? They seem to get the best talent around and usually pound the publics.

Uh never mind that last post for a minute. What is up with the Canyon clock management. Up by two scores with a nifty Diluigi running back who was dominant (7 yd average), they chose to throw, and throw. The last of three picks was with about 4 minutes left. They almost blew it. Great defense though . IF anyone saw this game, what did you think.

A public school - private school would be a start but many of the best public schools either have open enrollment ( L.B. Poly in addition to 5,000 students) or partial open enrollment ( open to their district ( Mission Viejo and Edison ), so where would they fit.

in Michigan it takes about 15 hours from the northern most high school to Detrioit were the game is played in the Ford Field House.

If anyone missed it, De La Salle, USA Today's #1 team in the country was beaten soundly tonight by Canyon Country - a team with 2 losses from the southern part of the state. DLS was very unimpressive.

I've watched De La Salle for a long time, that was the worst they've played in years. When they lost to Bellevue the players still played until the end. De La Salle players are known for playing with passion but last night was they were horrible.
In the next few years De La Salle has a lot of players who are damn good coming up. There are rumors of DLS playing Southlake Carrol in 07. Is it true?

CA championship games are a joke. The san francisco and oakland "sections" only have one league made up of eight teams each. Then the alignment of each section, as mentioned earlier, is so far off, true competition between sections is very difficult. It can be changed, but so can the BCS
