Our current admin is screwing athletics over big time. Our current principal has now been here 5 years and the 2 coaches he has hired have all been rift because of poor evaluations in the classroom. When he hired these 2 coaches he could not stop praising how good they were. Both were easily the worst coaches we have ever had. Our old principal (who hired myself 6 years ago) also hired the other 9 younger coaches (40 and younger) in our athletic dept. All 9 coaches are solid, work with kids in the off-season and for the most part push for the all the kids to get into the wgt room. Any advice or recommendations on how we can combat this prick and actually get some some people in here to coach? ?

Man - we were there just a few years ago JD. We are on the rebound now. All I can say is...hang in there. I was a couple phone calls away from leaving a couple years ago. Now, I am in for the long haul.
Hope everything works out. I do know that we have a bunch of teacher/coaching positions available if you want to move to CA. PM or email me an we'll talk!

thanks house, but I'm a midwest guy. The thing that pisses me off the most is our kids recognize that the admin just cares that the program is offered, not caring too much how well any of us do.
All I can think of is our admin is the little dutch boy standing at the bottom of the d y k e with his finger in the hole. That is all they do when we have a coaching opening. Does the guy have a heartbeat? yes, then you are hired for the teaching job and by the way your coaching football.

No consultation with you? You have got to take a stand. Get the AD in your corner. That is not right that they just throw some guy at you and say, "here's your new coach". Now you have to coach a coach. There is a time for that, but not at the point you are at.
Sure, hiring a teacher first is important. A teacher that coaches football is a bonus. A guy who teaches and watches football on TV and then wants to be a coach. NO.
Advice - Cocoon - When we get crap I just tell myself I know we are doing the right thing. The outsiders, including Admin., have no idea how many good things we are doing for our players. Most people see the product Friday night. They don't see the 1,000 invisible mornings you have put in with your players.
Go with the guys you have. Get it done.
Make in roads with the Principal if possible. Invite him to a pregame meal and have him say a few words to the boys. Get him a cool coaches shirt and a hat and make him buy in. Then go back and do what you do. Even with a turd you have to make it work for you.

Any social studies openings in the future, JD? From the outside looking in, the district you are in looks pretty good. I would love to end up where you are now. I would just have to sell my wife on the idea!

JD, all I can say is a I feel your pain...and you know what I am talking about. In the 5 years I spent at my old school we had approx. 10 teaching positions open up between the elem, middle school, and HS levels. Only once, with the admin who hired me, did we make an effort to get a great teacher who was also a great coach. When he left I pleaded with the new admin to at least interview all the teacher candidates who wanted to also coach. Not a single coaching candidate was interviewed and I was stuck beating the headges for parents and community members to volunteer.

coachjohnson,
there is a possibility of a social studies job. Not too sure on what the exact details would be. Will let you know more when the spring comes around.
the funny thing with our principal is he graduated from our school, is a local boy who played football and basektball for our current head coach. He was a good athlete.
tothehouse, i think that is what we are going to do. We are going to cocoon ourselves and coach the crap out of the kids with the 5 guys we have (9-12) and do the best we can. The head coach is basically going to tell the AD today that the 6th salary will be split between the 5 coaches. So not only will I be calling the plays on Friday night, I will be going with the JV on Mondays and the 9th grade on Thursdays.

In 2004 when the school refused to fill the other paid coaching position I told them to split the money bewteen me and the other coach...the AD and other admin told me NO. They were putting in back into the geneal fund. I almost punched someone right there.

JD, Have the head coach or AD set up specific expectations for the coaches and create a coaches evaluation form that correlates. If they don't meet expectations, put them on a growth plan for coaching. Treat the coaching part just like teaching, after a year or two, you can run them off if you follow the procedures the athletic administation set up. During the process, show good faith (even if you don't want to) and try to act (In front of the school district administrators atleast) in a manner that shows you have tried to help them improve (providing them with money and time to attend coaches clinics is always a good tool, most of the time they will refuse and show a lack of growth and good faith on their part. If they don't you have handed them the rope to hang themselves. Avoid running to the principal every time they screw up, it is taken like the kid that cries wolf. You can also make the process quicker by treating each season as a year, you might be able to cut off the dead limbs by the end of the season. This is how we are told to do it with teachers that are screw ups, it works for athletics too. The process seems slow at times, but you will either get them fired or run them off in two years or less guaranteed. The key is not bitching about their actions, but putting forth an effort to change their behaviors, if they don't they show proof that they don't have value in your organization. Even spineless admin's can't fight good faith documentation. If you want to know more, give me a call, I can give you very specific foolproof details to run them off by the end of the semester if you and your AD are desperate to get rid of them.
