Here's the question-
Our new HS HC has been doing the 7 on 7 circuit here, as any decent coach should. The only thing is he only takes 7 players, whom he hand picks as "being worthy". This is the first time I have ever heard of only taking such a limited number, especially when you are trying to install a new system and get player buy-in.
What number of players would you take to a 7 on 7?

I would take AT LEAST my #1's & #2's, as well as a "select handful" of sophomores & freshman who are worty.
Are you doing tournaments, or just playing individual games with teams each day of the week? I know at the "Ute Shoot" (University of Utah 7-on-7 tournament) we went up earlier this month, and played 8 games...we had our 1st & 2nd teams, and they were ALL still cramping up and getting tired/weak.

when we go to state qualifier tournaments we are limited to 20 players. we take 10 offense & 10 defense. at our league, we take about 24-25

We don't have the numbers for me to exclude anybody, so my answer is that I would take every player who wanted to come. If you are limited by something like a tournament rule or transportation - that is one thing. But to create an artificial 'class' of players (those worthy and those not worthy) - that is horrible IMO. For a couple of reason 1) injuries happen, what happens when one of the 'not worthy' guys needs to step in. Is he ready? Will he be accepted? Will he be hesitant? What if someone turns an ankle during the 7-on-7 - no backups? 2) it's 7-on-7. Seriously, it's about getting your team better. Not winning. Or playing your best. What if the other team wants to play their #2's? 3) Football should be about TEAM and inclusion. Not about segregation. It is a fact that for most programs, the best players play. Why choose to alienate all but a handful of players during the summer? Why de-motivate them now? 4) Can't the kids get a better understanding of the offense by watching? How are they going to see the adjustments and issues with the offense if they can't even see their team? 5) the players who are not playing can support and cheer-on their teammates. They could actually bond with each other over the shared experience.

We just go to a few 7-on-7 sessions - which are for Varsity only. Our teams here are distinct - our JV, Frosh and Varsity practice separately with unique staffs (although I try to attend the other teams' practices and help as much as possible). I was only talking about taking the kids to the sessions - not about getting them reps. We give the majority of reps to our #1's, then the #2's get less, #3's get a few and #4's have to prove themselves in practice first.

We expect all of our varsity WR, RB, QB, LB, and DBs to attend. We will also take the best 3-5 sophomores who can give guys a blow here and there.
I would guess that we usually take 15-20 guys.

We try to take as many as we can whether they play or not they like being there and their apart of the team. Most of them know there roles anyway.

Our school is pretty small, so we have alot of 2 way players. So we take who's been showing up for summer ball. Linemen and everybody. We can't really pick and chose. Plus we use 7on 7 to teach, and not so much "winning" or "looking good".

every varsity Qb, Wr, RB, DB, or LB plus any JV player who wants to come. Not everybody plays or gets the same amount of reps, but you can show up and try and get some time.

our new HS HC is taking only a "selected few" that have "shown the ability to be football players" (still trying to figure out what a football player looks like). Yes, he is doing weekend tourneys.

We take everyone that shows up. Usually 18-24 kids 10th - 12th grade. 1's get about 80% of the reps 2's get about 15% and everyone else gets in a little. We do have a lot of kids that play both ways so seems like in the later game the 2's & 3's get more reps as the legs and lungs give out.

We break ours up into A and B.... 7 on 7 is a good place to develop your second tier players.
