Do you need to have hand signals for personnel? Can't you just yell it out on the sideline? I've seen some teams that hand signal it in, but I'm not sure the reasoning.

I have done it both ways, think it depends on the size of your team, how many guys are going both ways, if you have your next personnel group close or you have a smaller team that can hear no reason for hand signals. When you have 60+ kids on sideline, they may see it before they hear it.

If you wanted to use numbers for personnel GROUPINGS (I.E. "11"; "12"; etc.) it can be done like this (we used these for PLAY numbers rather than personnel groupings): 0 = above head on right 1 = above head on left 2 = right ear 3 = left ear 4 = right shoulder 5 = left shoulder 6 = right hip 7 = left hip 8 = right knee 9 = left knee

From a defensive side we do both (hand signal and yell it out). That way our players can both hear us and see us- just in case it is too loud for a player on the field to hear.
No harm in doing both
