how we look at program structure can vary greatly......and up in the North, with no true Spring Ball, the necessity of large staffs isn't present.....
So how do you fare?
YOUR CORE GROUP OF COACHES...........(MS, Varsity, College, whatever)
now, I'm with a team that has 1 HC 1 RB coach 1 DC 1 STC (me)
for a team of 48

Varsity (including 9 - 12) staff we last had (that could be counted on to at least show up) was 4 + HC In season; Fr - 3 coaches(2 "volunteers") ------------------game night duties "Stand around and look cool" Soph - 3 coaches -----------------game night duties "stand around and question why the Varsity doesn't do what the Sophs do, even though it doesn't work...."
Vars - 3 coaches + HC -------game night duties "Use as many expletives prior to drinking oneself into the gutter that night" (for a 4A school in Iowa)
Since feeder programs "should run what they want to...". we didn't have any that could participate. (lol)

I am the head coach at a very small (9-man school), so we must manage time & responsibilities the best we can (very tough to do sometimes).
1 Head Coach (Offensive Coordinator) 1 Def. Coordinator 1 J.V. Coach (Special Teams on Friday nights) 1 Eighth grade coach 1 Seventh grade coach
We did have one volunteer for the Varsity for the past 3 years but not this season.

Varsity 4 paid another 5 volunteer Sophomore: 2 paid another 2 volunteers Freshmen: 2 paid another 2-3 volunteers
School where I just left had 3 including the HC for all grades 9-12 and one of those had to volunteer b/c the district said we did not need 2 paid assistants. Not a good situation when we have a different volunteer coach in the booth every other week.

We have nine paid positions at the HS (9-12) for the three teams. We also usually get 2-3 volunteer coaches, former players mostly, a year.
We have two paid 8th grade (middle school) coaches. The 6th and 7th grade teams are of the "Little League" variety.
Because of numbers, we have four paid coaches on the varsity, including two line coaches. Two of our JV coaches split a stipend. We do not practice varsity and JV together, although we did during two-a-days two years ago and it wasn't bad.

We have HC, OC (QB's), WR, RB, OL, TE, DC (Safeties), DB, LB, DE, DL. Everyone coaches JV and varsity, while the JV is practicing O the varsity practices D then we switch.
