I'm 24. Been coaching 6 years as a freshman assistant. Next year the Varsity coach asked me to head coach the 8th grade team. We are a new school (4th year) with a newer youth program (3rd year) and we aren't getting the consistency out of our youth coaches. Also, our numbers for our freshman teams have dropped each year. I would like to be as prepared as possible for next year, so there are a few questions I would like to ask: 1) What are some of the biggest obstacles with coaching youth football? 2) What are the major differences between coaching high school kids and 7-8th graders? 3) What are some things I can do to keep these kids excited about football and keep them in our program through high school? Any info that you guys can give will help me greatly. If you would like to get a hold of me please feel free to e-mail me at: lhs_coachrudy@msn.com

This is a good test for you sounds like coach rudy. I had a lot of dealings with the school 7th and 8th grade teams here(all good by the way). Lets see, biggest obstacles? You'll be at the bottom of the food chain when it comes to equipment, space to practice, officiating crews(if any) for games, stuff like that. Major differences? Hmmmm? Wont be able to do quite as much scheme wise but with these kids you should be more about fundamentals and maybe just running some of the basic stuff the hs team does. How to keep the kids playing? Just try to make your practices interesting and fun(much the same as you would in teaching any class), try to build some team spirit/character, make sure they keep their grades in school up to par or you'll lose a lot this way. Reguardless of what you do, you wont keep them all playing football thru HS, just too many outside influences beyond your control but just do your best. los

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'm 24. Been coaching 6 years as a freshman assistant. I would like to be as prepared as possible for next year, so there are a few questions I would like to ask:
1) What are some of the biggest obstacles with coaching youth football?
YOU ARE GOING TO NEED TO PUT SOME TIME INTO YOUR POLICIES REGARDING PLAYING TIME PRACTICE ATTENDANCE DISCIPLINE ACADEMICS FIGHTING/STEALING ETC PARENT MEETINGS AND GUIDLINES AROUND THEIR ABILITY TO CONTACT YOU (THERE ARE ALWAYS THOSE THAT NEED TO DISCUSS SOMETHING) ASSISTANTS DUTIES/ROLES ETC YOUR PLAYBOOK AND RELATIONSHIP WITH VARSITY YOUR PLAYBOOK AND RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUTH LEAGUES THAT FEED YOU
2) What are the major differences between coaching high school kids and 7-8th graders? THE SPEED OF THE GAME SHORT 8 MINUTE QUARTERS STUDS AT MS HAVE A HUGE ADVANTAGE PHYSICALLY IMMATURITY, ATTENTION SPAN, THOSE THAT HAVE HIT PUBERTY AND THOSE THAT HAVE NOT, TEACHING HOW TO WIN, TEACHING HOW TO FINISH, TEACHING HOW TO PLAY TIL THE ECHO OF THE WHISTLE, TEACHING DISCIPLINE, RESPECT, TEAM ETC...LOTS OF SIMILARITIES.
3) What are some things I can do to keep these kids excited about football and keep them in our program through high school? TEACHER COACHES WE DO MAY MADNESS TOUCH FOOTBALL AND DRILLS CAMP, WE PUT ANNOUNCEMENTS ON ABOUT FOOTBALL, POSTERS IN LOCKER ROOMS, I PATROL THE CAFE AND TALK FOOTBALL EVERYWHERE ALL THE TIME. WIN YOUR GAMES. THATS MORE IMPORTANT THAT YOU CAN IMAGINE. IF YOU LOSE AND LOSE BAD KIDS WILL THINK THEY SUCK AND QUIT.
Any info that you guys can give will help me greatly. If you would like to get a hold of me please feel free to e-mail me at: lhs_coachrudy@msn.com
