Here's the deal - You have got 5 varsity coaches for 9th through 12th - yes, I said 9th is included. Does anyone have any suggestions for practicing Varsity, J.V., and the 9th grade with 5 total coaches. We've had coaches quit - take other jobs - etc. and it does not look like we will be able to bring anyone else in (maybe 1). I need some suggestions other than get the whiskey or run. Thanks Coaches,
Coach Turley

We will have around 40 kids 10 through 12 - and 30 9th grade players. We will have quite a few having to go both ways on the Varsity.

Work them together during fundamentals period with one coach doing QBs/RBs, two working OL, two working WRs. The primary position coach can explain the skill/drill then focus on the varsity guys/upper-level JVs while the guy designated as the lower-level coach can concentrate on the lower JVs and freshmen. Do the same thing on defense with DL, LBs, DBs, splitting the coaches based on numbers in each group. If you pay attention to physical matchups this can work. For special teams, keep 4 guys with varsity/JV and one with freshmen. During group and team periods, keep three guys with the varsity plus one for scout team while the fifth takes the freshmen. Frankly, some JV kids may end up standing around and rotating in as bag-holders. It's not a perfect solution but this is a tough situation.

Coach Turley I am in the exact same situation. We had 70 players 9-12 last year and only 4 coaches. This year our staff is up to 5. It is a very tough situation to deal with especially when the other teams in our conference have at least 5 volunteers!!
Last year we sent the freshman away with 2 of the coaches and the HC and I stayed with the varsity. It was not a good strategy.
This year since I am now the head coach we are going to try something different. We are going to keep our freshmen with us all the way through individuals. Any technique and one-on-one work will be done with all the coaches present. Currently, we have two O-line, D-line coaches, 2 RB, QB, LB coaches and one DB coach. When we break into pass skelly, other group work, we are planning on sending down one coach with the freshmen and running their plays on air. WE really feel that we need to make sure the freshmen get a ton of reps, so we have them run their plays and make any adjustments and corrections without contact.
After group work, we will send down the other freshmen coach to have them scrimmage, while the Varsity does the same.
We do not have a JV only practice except for Saturdays. The majority of their practice comes on scout team. It sucks, but their just aren't enough coaches to go around.

to me the best way to do it is all working together. the frosh get to work with the varsity.
get your sr leaders to work with the freshman. make they part of the team.
i have said it before, we do not have fr, soph, jv and varsity coaches. we have one staff and one program. now do we have fr,soph,jv and varsity games, yes. we practice as one and every one dresses on friday night home and away. nothing better then bring 100+ players to a away game.
