Coaches,
I need some advice from you.
I have coached for three years and spent this past year as a head football coach. I took over a program that hasn't experienced winning in decades, the kids would rather make destructive choices than play football meaning we had very few numbers, and parents don't care if their kids play, skip, or don't come home. On top of that we are not very strong or talented and play in a very tough and talented league. This season we lost all of our games, just as they had done the previous two years. I came in and tried to instill a weights program over the summer, brought my kids to football camps and passing leagues and tried to went into the year knowing that we would not be good but hoped to see an improvement. Instead we did not improve. The players didn't seem to care weather we lost by one touchdown (which we were only this close once) or if we lost by the 50 point rule. I need to know what I should do. Ultimately I like being a HC and I know that I grew incredibly as a coach this year, but I want to end up as a HC at a medium sized competitive school, which I had originally thought I would take that step in about 3 years and hopefully finish my coaching career there. Now I don't know if I should cut my losses now and try to be an assistant at another school and wait for a better opportunity to come along, try to get another HC job now (which I'm guessing that with a winless record will not be easy, although the previous two years I have in coaching was at a very successful school), or stick it out here and hope that the problem gets better (I think the administration will probably give me a few years before getting rid of me). My kids don't have heart or discipline, and while I forced discipline on the football field they are not being held accountable in school or at home for their actions, which makes my job that much tougher. Any thoughts or ideas will be heavily appreciated.
