I just seen that SMU fired their HC after a 1-7 start. Just wondering how you guys feel about a coach being fired during the season. I personally think that if you know you are going to go a different direction with the HC it should be done ASAP, but at least let the coach finish the season. What do you think?

I believe Bennett will be there throughout the end of the season. Someone will get themselves a good DC in the near future. Just didn't cut it as a HC, but then again SMU is a TOUGH place to win at right now.

the nfl mentality has moved down into the college ranks. this is why coaches get such high pay at the nfl and d 1a level. here today, gone tomorrow.

Bennett is done, but will coach the remainder of the season. Phil is a great guy. I coached with his former Assistant HC and he is a class act. I think that he has set the table very well for the guy that follows him.

I think the man should have a chance to finish his job.

I don't think you should get rid of a coach until after the season is over. At least not for win/loss issues. If he hits a kid or something, that's different.

I played for Bennett for one year in college, and now he has become somewhat of a mentor to me as well as a friend. He has brought the program miles from where it was when he got there. The HC before Bennett (Mike Cavan - great guy, bad recruiter) ran it into the ground. Coach Bennett has filled the cupboards with young talent that the next head coach will reap the benefits of immediately. SMU is a better place than it was 6 years ago, and Coach Bennett is a big reason. Injuries demolished his defense this year, but he never made an excuse. He never complained. He showed his kids how to be a man and take the blame. He's a great man and a great coach. He will land on his feet, and someone will get a great DC out of it. Now to the question at hand, if an organization is going to pull the trigger on a coach, they should do it the moment they know what they want to do. If he's any kind of a man, he'll finish the season out (as Coach Bennett is doing). This allows the organization, the coach, and his assistants time to figure out what's next without getting sideswiped by late-breaking news.

it is made worse when the firing is made public. been part of a situation where we (coaching staff) knew that it was over with 3 games remaining. however, it was kept under wraps until the monday following the last game. this keeps some level of 'sanity' about the situation as i'm not sure how things would have gone (with the kids) had they known immediately that the staff were lame ducks.
