Coaches, coaches, coaches! Make sure you will have the ability to hire a staff! If your administration is on board, you should be able to bring in good teachers who are also good coaches.

Now start working on the schedule. Find some games (if possible) that are sure fire WINS! If you can win the first game in the history of the school - it is huge! Chances are you will take a few lumps the first year(s) but let everyone - players, coaches, teachers, parents, etc - know that they are all part of "Making" history, rather than simply being another part of being history.

Choose an offensive / defensive philosophy and teach it to your coaches first. Become experts in whatever it is you decide to run. Try to use the same terminology with 7&8 as with HS. Check out Rogers Ath. for some good equip. I have used them in the past and their stuff is high quality (although it can be $$$). Attend some coaching clinics, they often have representatives from many different companies specializing in FB related equip.

You're correct when you say there's a lot on your plate! I've done what you are doing before (twice, including my current team - we are in our 7th year) so I know what you're feeling. Don't try to "get" everything the first year, but whatever you do get, try to make it 1st class. Nice uniforms, spirit paks, etc. Make sure everyone in the school has a t-shirt or polo shirt thats says _________ Football on it to make them feel like they are a part of the excitement. Have a 5 year plan for equipment, uniforms, facilities, etc. Go to clinics, and don't forget to use this forum.

Coach as far as equipment what should be priority minus personal protective and team uni's. ie sleds dummies and is there anywhere i can find these things used.
Our uni's will look exactly like Kentucky's uni's

Starting a new football program - here's my recipe......
1) Talk to the Parents - Get them involved in any way possible. 7th & 8th grade? SEE CALANDE....Don't just focus on the kids, interact and involve the parents to take ownership in the program. Let them buy into your vision, let them be investors in what you are creating. Both mothers and fathers.....detail your expectations and timeline. Tell them what they can expect from you. The more support you gain, the easier fund raising and a potential 7th & 8th grade booster program becomes.
2) Talk to the administration - how much will they back you / money / decision making....if the proposal is out there, how far are they willing to extend themselve to support you?
3) Talk with the youth leagues ( 8 - 10 year olds) about the players they had (get the info of parents of those on the team). What can they do to keep the momentum and great work they've started moving? Tell them how important they are to your success.
4) Sell the program to the kids - on going process, reinforcing the impact each kid is making by CHOOSING to make themselves better by accepting the challenge each day with athletics. Reinforce the positives of football....character, determination, aggressiveness.
5) Talk to the Varsity - let them know you're on the scene and you're here to support them (whether or not you run 'their' stuff). See if any of their staff can help out or lend old equipment, be featured in their Varsity games (ball boys).
...........Get some competent AND LOYAL people you can use as coaches.

Get whatever you belive you need/want to get the job done. I really like the Rogers Lev Sled so we got a 2 man unit and built drills around it for all positions. We also use the one man sled (Gilman) for blocking and tackling drills. After that I used the rule of 4. 4 shields, 4 standups, etc. Have enough game & Practice "toys" that you can do the drills that you and your staff feel are needed. Have enough game and practice balls. The list goes on..

Don't rush into anything. Take it slow. BUILD. Play a JV schedule for at least 2 years. Don't fail ealry on and lose kids. TAKE IT SLOW.

Now is the time! If there is anyway possible! Get as much done with your facilities now as is humanly possible!
Make sure you have an edequate practice field and goal post. Get proper practice equipment - 7-man sled, blaster, footballs, scrimmage vests, timers, coolers and cups, painting equipment, dummies, and cones. Do you have a game field? Get that all squared away now.
I would suggest that you put your best man on these things (If you've got one), while you focus more on the kids and the parents and establishing your program.
The longer you do without, the greater the perception will be that you don't really need those things - and you do. If you wait until later, it will probably be coming out of your budget, and it takes a helluva lot of donuts to buy a 7 man sled.
Good Luck!
