I've got a laptop with an s-video output and I've got it plugged into my dvd recorder with the s-video cable. How do I set it up to play a dvd in media player so it will output to the recorder?

Place your mouse on the deskptop and click the right button > choose 'properties' > click the 'settings' tab > you should see 2 boxes that represent your monitors. The primary display(your computer screen) should have the number '1' and secondary display (your recorder with tv preferably) will be shown with a '2'. Leave your mouse on '2' and see if it says 'Not Active' Let me know and we'll go from there.

Try holding down the Function Key and pressing one of the F keys at the top. On mine it is F4. Or you can go to the Control Panel and adjust the Display properties to "Output to External Monitor"

As berg said, look at your F keys on the keyboard and look for a symbol or words that look like display settings --like crt/lcd or pictures of monitors. My Dell uses F8.
If not, highlight the primary box and click 'advanced' For here it'll depend on the video card you have - probably ATI, NVIDIA, or simply integrated in the motherboard. Check it and let em know.
