Hi coaches, I am a young coach trying to find my way through coaching. I am 23 years old played some JUCO ball and currently play some semi pro ball. I will be finishing up my teaching degree at a very small christian school here in the bible belt of the Mid West ( West Michigan ). Any way I am looking for some paid coaching postions I know the game very well I would like to stay in the area but if you have any friends in this area or you are a coach in this area that would be great if you could help me out in anyway. I would also be willing to move around the mid west if I could get a job working at the school in any other way. My goal is to become a head college coach someday and I have a real passion for the game there isnt anything I want to do more then coach the greatest game EVER. Please help with any advise or anyway you can help would be great.

If you want to coach college ball, seek a GA position somewhere. Try and get to the college ranks now. Otherwise, it is like anything else, it is not always what you know but whoyou know. Send resumes to every college you would be willing to go to and start making calls. Dont try and make the move to college later, do it now.

The GA route is the best way into college coaching and it involves taking a vow of poverty. The longer you wait the more obligations you'll have and that makes it less likely that you'll do it. Start with your JC coach. Ask him if he needs a GA or a volunteer. If not, ask him if he knows about anything else and, if not, to keep you in mind when he does. Also, talk with the JC assistants (they have friends, too) and your HS coach. If there are colleges near you talk to them, too. Your best asset right now is a willingness to work cheap. You say that you like the area. A willingness to move really enhances your prospects.

THANKS coaches. Also to be a GA wouldnt you have to be a student at that school and/or a grad student. I am at a small christian school that dosent have a fooball team and I am still in my undergrad. There are 2 very good college programs in my area Grand Rapids CC and Grand Valley State. Do you think I could possibly just be a volunteer coach and do some grunt work. I am so willing to coach at the college level I would do ANYTHING to be on staff if I have to wash jocks with my bare hands to be able to coach at the college level LOL. But do you think a college would even think about giving a non student/ and non grad a shot I mean they dont have to pay me {censored} and I live within driving distance of both. Some insite PLEASE. Should I call the coach and tell him my passion and goal of being a college coach or what should I do. THANKS.

Yes I would call these programs and let them know you would help. I am doing something similar like this with a JUCO in Iowa, that plays in the same conference as GR. I got this gig by talking to the head coach who I know since I was a student assistant for him while I went to junior college their. Although it can be tough life finically.
