Okay Coach Einsteins. who has some good inventions that are results of when they didn't want to buy some overpriced piece of equipment from a catalog?
I have made speed ladders from pvc pipes and rope...

I made a set of chutes from PVC and 6 by 6's last year for about $80. Ours went missing after some work was done on a drainage ditch about a week before 2 a days.

We made a kicking tripod for our kicker out of scrap pvc. All I had to buy was the fitting , because I already had the glue and pipe. Total cost was around 80 cents.
Now he can practice kicking without a holder.

Old football on a shoe string to simulate snap for defensive linemen - costs $0.15 - improved reaction time - priceless.

How did the pipe work for the speed ladders. I was always afraid of players rolling their ankles. I like the idea of using a 2"x8"x10' for your off. line bevel the side down and put some heavy finish on it.

I made agility ropes out of 1 1/4 inch PVC pipes. I made it about 15 ft in length, our pool was being renovated and there was extra PVC pipes that were left behind. The only thing that cost us was the bungee cords.

rec poles. 4 x4 timbers, cemented into buckets.
got the buckets from the bakery for free, timber was a donation from landscapers. we bought the cement. mixed it up in a wheelbarrow and used our own tools.

a plain white envelope with a large stack of large bills (Monopoly $$$) for the head ref (who was friend) as a joke at the beginning of a game... helped us get some calls by being friendly and having fun

Free Standing QB passing net from PVC. Left some of the joints unglued so it can be broken down and stored. Allows our QB's to work on throws when receivers are not available. The "net" is a yard tarp of see-through black mesh. It is working great in our off-season workouts.

4-way Tug-of-war. Large metal ring, c-clamps, 4-1' lengths of chain, 4-30' lengths of 1' nylon rope. Total cost $120 (rope mostly) but very good workout. Connect the chain to the clamps, tie the rope to the chains. We do this several times over the summer and as a reward at the end of practice.
We use 3 guys on the ends of rope. Set a 10-yd square with cones, put the ring in the middle. You win if you get the ring over your end-line. What is effective is that if the pullers change their angles they can combine forces against the other teams. Then to win they have to shift angles again. Our best battle was a 47-second war with the OL/DL. Because this is strength and some agility (moving angles) it works the players pretty well.

1 more thing - elevated ropes. Took 4 12" spikes, put them through a PVC end cap, connected that to a 6" length of .75" PVC. Filled that with plaster. Put a 3-way cap on top of that. Poked the spike into the ground (10 yds on a side) and ran a .25" rope and elastic ropes through the tops. Now I have a 40-yd perimiter that is is 5-6" off the ground. Because of the elastic the rope will give so nothing gets broken.
I use this to have the players jump over it. Ex: 1st length is right foot only, 2nd is both feet, 3rd is left foot only, 4th length is both feet again. Change off the jumps. We run this in summer conditioning.
