I'm getting closer.... ...to having my masters in sports coaching from Ohio University. Between moving week 2 of this football season, selling my house, learning a new job, etc., I was finally able to do my capstone coaching video project.
I moved from an assistant varsity position to a volunteer assistant on the freshman squad at my new school (Hometown...had to take the opportunity to get back).
It's super generic. Fullback trap with a bunch of my freshman players. If you have 16 min. I would appreciate any feedback!

Thanks! John

Good video. You can't go wrong with trap. I do have a couple questions. Why do you want the pulling g first step to be flat? A coaching point for us is to get into the line when pulling. On down blocks we always put our heads in front to stop penetration. But I have wondered if the head shouldn't be on the other side. Do you have a reason why you do it that way? I'm not critiquing the way you do i just like to know they why behind it

Thanks for the feedback! I always coach to get lateral on the first step of a pull. I have found if I don't then we get bucket steps and we are slow. If we can get our feet headed the right way and eyes on our target, we will be just fine. This goes for the Buck-sweep pull as well. Get lateral and see your target. I use to coach elbow whip, but I would get all kinds of crazy footwork. If I can get their 3rd step on the ground headed the right way, we should be okay. Plus, if that DT penetrates at all...he is right where we want him to be. About 300 ways to skin that cat.
As for the head on down-block. We almost always have a double team, so I should have a hat on each side of that center with eyes on the LB. Technically, we could teach both, but to keep it simple, we always have our head in the hole. If we can get a shoulder on him...if he wants to run away from the block...great. We will take him there. If we try to get our head on the inside to stop penetration and we miss, or he comes to our gap on some kind of stunt, now he is standing at the LOS with no one in between him and our ball carrier. Only about 238 ways to skin that cat! HAHA!
Bottom line is I try to keep everything as simple as possible with very few words. I want my kids to play as fast as they possibly can. "Clear minds make fast feet."
Again, thanks for the feedback! JVD

Good video, as an OL guy it's obvious you're not working with linemen (too athletic looking). I liked the concept of your pull drill where they step back, pull, and add on to the end of the line. I'm going to steal that one for our counter plays when we pull our tackle around the OL.

Nice work, coach. How do you like that Master's program? I've always been curious if it would be beneficial.

It has really been great! It was way more involved that I thought it would be, but in a good way. The best part was the networking with other coaches in all sports to include the professors at Ohio. Give me a call if you want 906-869-0607

Nice Work. I also liked the pull step wrinkle to get extra reps.
