How do you strike the right balance between running a focused high pace team/practices but also making it fun for the players?

Hello everyone, first thing I want to say is great job on this board/website. I love coming here and learning from all the coaches. Little bit about myself. I have been coaching for 5 years on the freshmen level and this year I was promoted to head JV coach.
Being a young coach, I still have a lot to learn and I am looking for advice from the experienced coaches. My coaching style or at least "coaching plan" is to be prepared and organized. I like to run fast paced practices that are very focused and we can get a lot done in a couple hours.
My question is how to accomplish this and still make it fun and exciting for the kids? This is a game after all, and I think that playing on JV should allow them to enjoy the game while preparing to play on varsity next year.
Another question I have that is kind of on the topic is ... Does anyone have any ideas for activities you can do during to season for "team-building" or just to break up the two-a-days. I have been thinking about doing a couple things:
- Giving them a break one afternoon and instead of practice organize a movie in the auditorium or trip to the bowling alley
- Bringing ice cream at the end the day after a hot practice.
- Having a "pizza and film" night, where we come in and watch game film and have pizza.
Any other ideas? Thanks for your time and opinions!
