We are going to be interviewing candidates for captain in the next couple weeks. I already have some ideas about what to ask them, just wondering if any of you would be willing to share what you would ask?
thanks

Situational question: If you were told that a teamate of yours has been seen at parties drinking this past weekend, how would you handle this?

what 'answers' would lend a kid to be a captain and what answers would eliminate an applicant?
what would your criteria for captainship be if it is not action?

A couple years back we had our captains sign a contract and it seemed to help. We identified the traits we though a captain should posses. Then last year, with no real good senior leaders to chose from, we went with out captains. I think I'm going with that from now on. At some schools there are clear captain types, at others you end up with one or two bad ones every year. I could tell you a lot of stories of bad ones. I can email you our contract that we used if you PM me your email address. That might help you formulate some questions.

Who determines who gets an interview? I'd interview/talk with every kid and ask them, among other things who they saw as leaders and why. The staffs opinion and that of the team may differ on a couple of kids- so ask.

We have them give a speech to their teammates as to why the team should elect them as a captain. It's open to anyone but most of the players are seniors. It works really well. Everyone has an opportunity to be captain, and you find out who REALLY wants it. After the speeches the players vote for however many captains we are wanting to have, we count up the votes and it's done.

Never thought choosing captains should ever be a straight up popularity contest.

We've always picked our capt's as a staff. The coaches should know who best fits the mold in my opinion. In most cases the kid has already earned the spot the year before by his actions. Personly, I don't like to make a big deal out of it because it's somewhat of an individual issue that can steal focus from the "team".

Ill ask each candidate to explain how he is qualified and find out if he can live up to my expectations. Like most things, itd have a contract.

Never thought choosing captains should ever be a straight up popularity contest. In my experience even when you ask the kids the kids don't pick the most popular person
