Watching Iowa vs. UM, I don't understand why teams (HCs) go for two instead of taking the extra point in the 1st half of a game or even in the third quarter. That 1 point can be very valuable at the end of the game. It just isn't a very logical approach. Is this just a "feel good" aka we are tied sort of move?

Unless the EP is greater, there isn't much sense to chasing points in the first half.

Assuming that they are merely going for 2 to make it tied early (as your post implies) then yeah it is silly. However, if you can be successful on a 2 pt attempt at rate greater than 50% then logically you should go for it (of course if that were the case they would be going for two more often). The only other thing I can think of is that the Iowa coach is banking on a super low scoring 2nd half, in which neither defenses give much. In which case he needs the points now.
