Coaches,
I am interested to know if you assign certain responsibilities to assistant coaches during the game and if so why?
We have an OC and DC who are free to call the game on their respective sides of the ball and then a further 6 coaches as follows
STC/RB DL LB QB WR
And finally myself as the HC
Thanks
James

Thanks,
We are all volunteers coaching in the UK and therefore don't have a booth (or a stadium) unfortunately
What would you like to do if you had more coaches?

We have a guy who is a wizard with fixing helmets, so he's our go-to guy for any equipment issues.
We have 2 guys up top.
2 guys signaling in plays.
1 "get back" coach.
And 1 who is the basic medical needs and rotation person.

OC/DC call their side of the ball. HC works on offensive side. RB / STC / Freshmen Coach signal in formations and plays. DL coach on the field making DL stunt calls, sideline adjustment. 1 Sec. coach on the field making secondary calls. 2 JH coaches on the field as "get back" coaches Pressbox: QB coach & Freshmen Line coach on headset with offensive coaches 2nd Sec coach and Freshmen DC on headset with defensive coaches 2 JH coaches - 1 charting offense, 1 charting defense

But, asking for clarification on penalties or things of that nature, we all do that. Our "get back" guy usually follows pretty closely to the officials, just to keep everybody out of the way, so he usually ends up having random conversations with them.

Our booth consists of 3 guys in the booth, the OC who calls plays, Me who helps the DC with what the opposing team is doing, and our freshmen coach who uses tablets to film on the tablet so we can watch film midgame. Very convenient.
Our Sideline is the HC, DC, Special Teams, OL, DL, and QB coach. The HC is responsible for timeouts, clock management, and substitutions & having all 11 on the field.

We have position coaches control their own rotations. They're subbing guys in and out for breathers and making sure they know if a guy is banged up or just needs/wants out. That's about 6 different coaches for us doing that OL, RB, WR, DL, LB, DB. Those guys are on the field.
We also have 2 guys that signal plays. OC and DC call the plays from the field. HC is down there motivating and controlling the overall game. He usually has offensive headset on. He works on the officials and prefers the rest of us don't including the players.
We also have a HUDL coach that is showing plays on ipad to players or position coaches for corrections. Strength coach is mostly "get back".
We have 3 guys up on the booth spotting. They also use the ipads.
We have a lot of coaches. Several of them are volunteer. Not all of these people are involved in daily practice.

I give out an assignment sheet every year before the first game. This will include all pre and post game duties and places to be. It will also include what to do during the game (special teams subs, equipment problems, medical problems, etc). Don't ever assume someone knows what you want.

He also calls the Defense OC is up top calling plays DC is up top calling formations and players SC is down on the field doing that plus coaching his positions as well as signaling Assistant 1 is signaling and looking at safeties on offense Assistant 2 is watching OL/DL stuff Assistant 3 is watching OL/DL and dealing with equipment issues We also have a trainer dealing with player needs.

We do a couple of different things than many folks do. Our play offensive play charter has a neon highlighter pen that he underlines every play that goes for 8 or more yards. He tells the OC at halftime or other breaks, what plays have been "winners". The Freshman HC is in the box charting "hits", by down and distance. We find that teams find a groove each game and it helps to have a feel for their tendencies tonight. By the 3rd quarter, we nearly always have a good pattern figured out. I wont say anything about sign stealing other than if we can't read you by the 2nd Q, it isn't going to happen. I also really like the idea of having an injury updater who personally goes to each sub and tells him he's now in on KOR for Billy. No timeouts wasted getting a substitute Guard in on PAT team.
