For teams who have awards at the end of the year, who and how are they chosen? Things like "offensive MVP" for example.

Our DPOTY is based on our production points.
Everything else is based on the 'eye ball' test. That DI DE that everyone runs away from, would win the DL award, etc....

We vote on our awards as a staff. My philosophy is generally to pick the top players on our roster, and then shoe horn them into the various awards we give out to make sure that the guys who I feel deserve to be recognized get my vote.
For example, if the kicker is kind of a turd but he kicked all the extra points and did all the punting, and some other guy is a 4 year senior who is on all the special teams and is one of the better guys on the defense, but didn't get an award as a defensive player, he's getting my vote for ST player of the year.

We have an MVP and Most Improved for every position group.
And we have some speciality awards, like the 110% and Coaches Award. We also have an overall O and D MVP.

At the end of the season we give out 3 awards
1. Hardest Hitter 2. Weight Room 3. Most Inspirational
We have the players vote and we tally these as a staff and then vote as coaches.
We tend to stay away from the traditional "individual awards" and focus on the things mentioned above that we feel are vital to the success of our program.
We will submit our guys for conference player of the year both offensively and defensively if we feel recognition should be warranted.
