We are in the midst of one of my worst seasons coaching. Our talent level is very low and so are our numbers. As a staff we are coaching our brains out, and on a positive note our kids have not quit on us. What are some suggestions to end this thing off on a good note as the future (schedule and personnel) is bright.

Went through it last year. My best advice is to stay positive, find ways to put players in situations they can be successful, and invest time in the players. They don't like to lose either but if you continue to love, encourage, and build on the little victories then if will make a difference in how much time they put into off-season.
Last year we were 1-9. This year we will be 6-3 and in the playoffs. We did the things I mentioned above. Spent a lot of time in the offseason on character and leadership development. It has paid off for us.

If your day to day focus is wins and losses, then the rising and falling tide of team moral will mirror those totals.
However, if you make the game about the process then you can find positive and significant markers in other areas.

We are 7-0, and the kids/coaches are not happy with our performance. It has nothing to with wins- it's growth. We haven't grown at the rate a championship team does- kids know it and we know it.

When we went through this we emphasized loving our guys. Especially the young group. It's going to get better. When the season ends take a week or however long you need before starting your offseason program to refresh. When you come back, attack it with enthusiasm because that's contagious.

Thanks guys for your input. I guess we are at a very tough time of season where we are facing the toughest teams in the state and we are doing very well as a team. But as coaches we are responsible for our teams enthusiasm. So we attack these last two like its the state championship!

Coach them like they're winners and act like you want to be there.
I tell my kids the scoreboard Is my judge and I'm their judge to not even worry about the score. Kids know when you're coaching them hard and they're getting better or if you're just punching the clock with them.

The question is, how do you define success? If success is solely dependent on the scoreboard, you will be disappointed. Back several years ago we had group that went to the semi-finals, but graduated 21 players on our offensive 2 deep and 19 on our defensive two deep. Only 11 letter winners returned, and only one of them was a starter. We had 8 seniors and 12 juniors coming back and we knew it would be a struggle.
We had 6 ranked teams on our schedule and 8 playoff teams. We struggled on the scoreboard, but focused on getting better every single week. We stayed positive with our players every day. We lost our first 6 games, but got better each week with 15 sophomore starters. We coached our guys on being THEIR best each day, regardless of circumstance. We won our last three games and had momentum heading into the winter. The next year we won our district and had another great season. The biggest deal was, the year were weren't very good we didn't have everyone quit. Everyone finished the season, and no one quit before the next fall. Even though we went 3-7 it was by far our best coaching job.

We went 2-8 last year. It sucked but we had a great time coaching the kids and coached them hard. The most frustrating days were the weeks we felt like we didn't get better. We played a few good teams tough and while we weren't proud of the outcome we were proud of the effort our kids put out. There were weeks that weren't like that but we coached them like it was a championship every week, but we celebrated little things to keep the kids up. We also ran a trick play or two more just to keep the kids engaged and having fun. Didn't always run them, but even practicing them the kids had fun.

I will take a losing season every season if it means that every kid on that field gets a chance to attend college after their senior year...
Too many people define success by "wins" and not by creating "winners"
1st and foremost were here to forge and mentor young men, the sport is only the meduim tbrough which we are able to accomplish this

Make sure the kids have some fun. If you are playing a team you KNOW you can't beat, loosen up and make sure the kids have fun.
We had a year like this. We had a practice or two where we did a 7 on 7 tournament. I'm talking linemen were also playing WR/QB you name it.
Kids had a blast and the coaches did too. Best thing we did that season.
