I'm the HC of our JV team. When dealing with officials, even some really bad ones, I always try to keep things very light. I realize it's JV and the world isn't going to come to an end over a missed call or three. I also know that the officials for our JV game are often the same officials that later handle our varsity game.
My issue is this - the HC of our varsity program acts like a lunatic when officials miss a call or make a bad call. And he rides them all night. I know this probably sounds ridiculous but the result is that officials seem to be getting pissed to the point that they are intentionally not making calls that would benefit us. For example, this past week (late in the 3rd quarter when our HC had been lighting up the officials all evening) there was a pass play 30 yards down the field. The QB was scrambling to save his life and when he made the throw the left tackle was literally a yard away from the receiver. Our HC started hollering at the official, he looked right into the HC's eyes and said, "Okay" and had a little smirk on his face but never threw the flag. It seems to be happening week after week.
So - what's your approach for dealing with officials and any advice on how to deal with my HC?

He gets to do things the way that he wants to. That's what the "Head" in "Head Coach" means.

My approach is to lightly point out the stuff like false starts, holding and pass interference. "Hey can you watch 72 please, he's holding pretty bad, thanks"
Get amped but don't be a d bag about player safety unless it's blatant they won't call it for whatever reason. I had my LS get hit 5 times in a row with a nice reminder for 4, the 5th time I did lose it a little... and they finally called it. At the lower level you get the bad ones + the rookies and sometimes, like as a new coach, they get overwhelmed.

Agreed. Some guys forget that officials are human beings and can get pissed just like they do. But, if he wants to dig that grave it's his team. Sometimes we get some real dumb a$$es man. The only time you ever see us hammer a ref is if he truly hosed us on a call

Boneyard, it is uncanny how similar some of the things you go throw are to what I have been through, almost shockingly so. I have been in the EXACT situation you were in, what made it worse was when the V HC would come to the sidelines during home JV games (great guy, and its his program but the way he hopped on officials constantly produced a negative outcome). FWIW, I believe being cordial but direct is the best way to work with most situations in life (although my wife says it is being confrontational). This includes dealing with officials. I am polite, and respectful, but if they screw up I let them know (same with my players, colleagues, and with myself). It feels as if your HC is either incapable of controlling his emotions, or thinks he can intimidate and pester the refs into giving him calls (probably a balance of both). Now I have no problem with a coach trying to work a ref to get a call, read the book scorecasting and it will show how influencing officials is the biggest key to homefield advantage. But if you flip out over EVERY call, and ride him all night, then it just becomes white noise.

I think it's the HC's responsibility to chew on the officials a little bit. Nothing crazy, of course, but there's a "game within the game" aspect to it. I wish our HC would show a little more aggression towards the refs at times, when warranted.

I've only lost it two times were I went over board on them.
One was my first year coaching a team that just had 15 players and they called too many men on the field. I had 4 on the sideline and berated them while I counted my 4 standing there.
The other one called back a game winning interception return because of an inadvertent whistle.

Our HC has been out to the numbers and beyond a couple of times, but honestly it has been for pretty good reasons. He has a pretty good sense of what he can and cannot get away with.
For JV; I try to keep it light. We get the same crews a lot in this area, so I've gotten to know a number of them. I did loose it this past Monday, but like somebody said earlier, it was because of player safety.
We only had a three man crew, and as such, they had missed a few calls, which I completely understand. Some of the little ones were pretty ridiculous; for example, they didn't have anyone on our sidelines, so our splits to our side didn't have anyone to punch on to, he was just doing his best, he gets called for an illegal formation penalty from the official looking down the line from the other sideline, no warning to us, no warning to the player, nothing. Still, I just informed the umpire that we would appreciate a warning next time.
The one that I came completely unglued on was a late hit on our sideline. We had a kid running to our sideline, obviously going out of bounds, and one of their kids drives him into the ground a solid 3 to 4 yards out of bounds, almost ran into our benches which are practically on the track. Lead official said he didn't have an angle and it didn't look like anything "extra-curricular." This same official was a sub for a crew who told us during a Varsity game that you have to kick from the middle of the field (we are a right hash kick team) because "that's why they put the 'X' in the middle of the 40." I am our Varsity Special Teams coordinator, and my HC and I both came unglued that time. After a brief conference of the officials, we got to kick from the hash.
After typing this and thinking about it, maybe it is just that one guy...

Our HC is as loose of a canon as they come. So much so that at times, Admin would have someone come stand on the sidelines just to let their presence be felt. This only further fueled his fire. I'm guilty of it as well, I cannot understand why blatant penalties that every joe blow on our sideline can see, are not seen by the guy on our sideline.
We've had to tone it back for multiple reasons but the biggest reason being is that the kids were starting to follow in our footsteps. Every horrible call we lost our minds about meant the kids had an excuse for what had gone wrong. Or at least they thought they should have one. This year we've changed that as much as possible but it's still lingering in the backs of the officials minds from last season.
One thing that helps imo is to compliment them on a few calls early on, whether it be for or against your team. When asking an official to keep an eye on something I typically wait until the walk out at halftime and respectful mention it to him. "You fellas called a great half, however, my right tackle is a kid who wouldn't complain if his pants were on fire and he's telling me the DE is getting his hands so far up into his grill that he can smell the kids girlfriend from last night. Can you do me a favor and keep an eye on it?"
It at least gets them to pay attention to it in the 2h.

I'm pretty light with them. In part because they let me get away with being WAY out of the coaches box. I get a litttle reminder and step back. Now I have a guy on staff that use to be a basketball coach and I think there is a different type of interaction there. I have to tell him to back off. Now I get a little worked up when the officials act like if you're coaching sub varsity you don't know what you're talking about.
Has anyone ever sent film or stills of blown calls to the assigner and/or officials?

1- If you don't like the officiating, then you need to be an ambassador for the sport and try and recruit some new blood into the ranks. If every coach in your state recruited 1 new official and only 1/2 stuck around, then the officiating ranks would swell dramtically. 2- Start cultivating relationships with the officials. Most of the ones you see this year will be the same ones you will see next year and 15 years from now. 3- Inform them of 'what you do' before hand (trick plays, tempo, etc...) and deal with disagreements objectively. 4- Talk to officials like colleagues instead of adversaries. Yes, there are some bad ones out there. Guess what, there are some bad coaches around also. 5- Send film. The officials in your league are professionals just like you are. They want to be able to look at calls/situations with the objective eye of film just like coaches. AND they will use some of that film in officials clinics.

Every Billy BadA$$ coach that argues with the ref wants to put on a show for the fans/admins to show that he's "sticking up for our kids"and he's "not gonna let them get away with that chit" Yet is clueless why the refs treat them like dogchit and turn a blind eye to things. You are not Bobby Knight, Jim Harbaugh, or Bill Belichick. STFU, treat them like human beings and build relationships with them before/after every game.

I'm bad with officials. I hold a grudge (trying to fix this...not proud of it). HC put me in the press box so I wouldn't yell at them.
Headsets didn't work last week...so I was back on the sideline. I was back to my old tricks. I need therapy.
The only good thing I feel like I do...is tell them "good call"...for all the good calls they make. And not sarcastically. But...it's when they call something...then it happens again and they don't call it...I struggle.
Is there a 12 step ref intervention class online somewhere?

I always try to treat them like people and how I want treated. Do I occasionally get heated yes, but I let it go quickly and then try to get an explanation of it. My biggest frustration is when they won't explain something or blow me off.
I also try to shake hands and thank them after the game. I've gotten BOD from guys before and I can't help but think it's because it's JV and I wasn't all over them as officials.
