I'm confused as to how this works... Can a school just decide against you coaching a specific sport and not offer you a new contract? Do I have to resign first, or do they have to fire me? Or can they simply just not offer a contract to me with no explanation?
Reason I ask is that I coach wrestling and have yet to get a contract. The season starts in 3.5 weeks and the Interim AD will not respond to my emails about this. I don't really care one way or the other but some communication sure would be nice.

Yes.
They can just not renew you, don't even have to give a reason.

Yes, once the contract expires they're under no legal obligation to have any further discussions with you. Morally, though, the AD should have the decency to say, "We're going in a different direction, thanks for the help in the past, I wish you well." If your AD is ignoring emails and won't even extend common courtesy I'd say your life is better not coaching for him.

My last school we never got contracts like until October In fact my wife still works there and hasn't gotten one yet. But they still have been paying every body

are you coaching other sports at the school, and are you teaching there, I would say your wrestling is done, were you the head guy or asst, if you were the asst call your head, but I would be guessing it is over, sounds like you may not want to be there with that lack of communication

The head for wrestling moved to Colorado and took a job out there, I spoke with AD yesterday and he approved a contract for me. He assumed that the new guy coming in would furnish a staff, new guy coming in is only bringing one guy with him. I use wrestling season to get into shape each year so it's important to me to help out. Lost 40 pounds during a 2.5 month season last year. It's also important to me because I can help keep our football kids out this way. I do not teach at the school, but do coach football, wrestling and track. The school is a mess and we have an interim AD right now, first opportunity I get to take a football position elsewhere, I'm doing it.

In Kansas, coaching contracts are supplemental. They can offer or not. Some schools have taken all the supplemental contracts away from teachers/ coaches in hopes that those people who really want to coach and teach will leave. Most of the time, those are bad districts and shotty moves like that have come back to bite them in the butt.
