I am blessed to be at a school that doesn't do any weird traditions, but I have a buddy whose two previous schools have done a Homecoming Olympics involving all the football players the day of their homecoming game. He's seen star RB blow out their knee, starting QB break his arm, etc... doing all sorts of crazy stuff for these Homecoming Olympic games. Even the parents will take the day off to watch their kids play in these games. People care more about these Olympic games than actually winning the homecoming game.
Administration sees no problem in any of it because it's "Something they've always done coach!"
I'm just curious... What is the stupidest tradition you have seen at a school?

Oh yeah, I have been at a place that does a massive homecoming olympics type deal (infact I think you may be talking about the school I was at). There are events all week , but during the Friday there are no classes and various events (some of them can get very violent). Usually its the female students who go overboard (multiple concussions, couple dislocations) but it can be the guys too.
It ends with a massive relay race with about 40 events, usually water-balloon toss type stuff, but had a kid go down once for competing in the "chug a gallon of milk" portion.
It definitely can wear the kids down if they do too much, nd hurt them come game time. So we limit the events the football players do, and tell them to go home and rest right after (they are done by noonish). I wouldn't say the school only keeps it because "its something they've always done"; they keep it because its fun, the kids enjoy it, the community enjoys it, and things don't completely revolve around football. Not to mention we can limit what the athletes do and we usually won homecoming anyways.

As I type this our "Spirit Day" is in full swing. Water balloon toss, egg toss, wheelbarrow race- all on the grass game field. Do you think anyone picks up those balloons and egg shells? HELL no. Besides just generally tiring our players out, they're really not too physically demanding. Except one. They do a relay race where the kids sprint while jumping rope for 200m. Had a few kids get pretty hurt on our cinder track, but like you said "We always done it that way!!" I {censored} hate Homecoming. And we play two of them.

Does skipping class count as a tradition? Do kids not have to be at school for the majority of the day to be eligible for a game that night?

Powderpuff football with girls in pads & males turning into drag queen cheerleaders. This except it's two hand touch, and not only are their guy cheerleaders there's a drag homecoming court "backwards homecoming". Guys get in dresses and wigs and are introduced like a homecoming court. My senior year I "won", then had to practice with all the makeup on my face that I couldn't wash off. That's as far as we go, nothing physical or anything and there's nothing but a pep rally on game day.

Yes, back in the day, when I coached out in Idaho, there was a school that had a heck of a homecoming week, the 9th grade was told what to dress up every day in by the upper class, then on Friday we had a half day, then the 2nd half the student body went to the football field, the frosh were made to un a obstacle course of nasty stuff, usually finishing off in a trough of a mixture of molasses and other crap, they would do this over and over with the seniors yelling and screaming at them, parents watching from the stands, 9th graders crying all over the place, then it was done, then had a game that night, probably the craziest week of homecoming to all the schools ive been too, thank heaven we never had to rely on a frosh to start, idk if they still do that
