I am a new Offensive Coordinator and I am not getting the greatest information from the booth. I realize this is my fault as I haven't told my assistant what to look for. Do you all have any suggestions as what to tell him to look for? When I was up in the booth I looked at d-line then backers then coverage and relayed that info preplay call. We are a spread team as well. any help you can give will be appreciated.

How they are lining up to certain formations. What they do to adjust to motion. What coverage to formations. Match ups at certain positions. Then after that any tendencies your may see from up there

Look for things that are hard to see from the field:
1) Dline alignment (was he in a 1, a 2i, etc) and stunt pattern 2) O line technique errors (what mistake was specifically made that caused a breakdown) 3) Alignment/Leverage for the opposite side of the field (ie things happening on the opponent's sideline)

As a spread team, in theory it should be easy to read it from the booth (as well as the field)
For each formation I look from the top down. My check list goes like this
How many high safties? Are their corners zoned off or manned on? Do they have double sky force? What is their personnel/ front (even or odd)?
next comes specifics What is their trips check? What is their empty check? How do they react to 2 back?
and if you really have a sharp guy... how do they set up? Field/Boundary? Strong/weak? Left/Right??? Is there coach/player screaming out the play call?

On the offensive side I want a few things.
1. How are they lining up presnap. Post snap do they seem to be hiding their coverage or are they pretty vanilla? Most are vanilla these days but our DBs are very active presnap and stem all over the place.
2. If we motion (especially on something like jet) how are the DBs defending it? Are they rolling to the motion? Are safeties coming up hard on it to plug the run?
3. In the run game, who is making the tackle? Are backside LBs running down zone so I can come back with counter? Etc.
4. If it's split field coverage, how are they determining which side is which? Ex: where and why are they running 2 on one side and 4 on the other?
That's pretty much all I need to know.

Box guy needs to tell you who made the play. That will tell you what play to call next.
Position coach needs to watch their position and tell you "johnny phuked up on that play and missed the block, but it was there" "billy didn't run the right route, or it would've been open"
As the coordinator you should be able to tell if they're lining up and running what you expected but the guy in the box can help with that if needed.

He can confirm this for you, or tell you what is different. He can look at the paper for play #2 as soon as the 1st play is over. Add notes on there for what you want relayed down to you off of each formation.

Down and distance. Personnel substitutions. Formations. Break downs in the play. In that order.

As an OC I want super quick D/D. If we're missing RPO's that are open what are they. Adjustments by formation/motion or lack there of. Alignment of DL, LB, DB. All the stuff everyone has said + some suggested plays. WHAT'S OPEN? WHAT'S WORKING?

We run Wing-T so, offensively, we're looking for the following:
1. How is the DL reacting to our blocking schemes? Are the trying to get penetration (i.e. we need to trap them) or are tey stepping down (i.e. we need to hit the edge)?
2. Are the LBs keying the guards or are they playing assignment football (yes we see this sometimes). If they are reading guards, WHICH LBs are reading them? We also want to see how fast they are flowing with the guards.
3. What kind of coverage are we seeing? We don't need this for our passing game as much as we need it to identify the force players.
4. How is the secondary responding to our motions? Are they rotating the coverage or are they following?
5. Are they pressuring the A-gaps to disrupt pulls? If so, how are they doing it and how do we need to adjust or blocking? We'll also hit them with a stretch scheme (Rocket or Jet) fairly quickly if they're blitzing those gaps hard as we want to make them think twice about doing so..
