How do you guys foster competition in the kids when you have small numbers and can't exactly go best on best, eventually the kids just start to tune out the pick it up talk

I like to use a variety of competitions to end practice instead of just straight up running to condition.
Tire tug of War under the chutes. Pull the guy out from under the chutes. If you let go of the tire you lose.
Tractor tire flip relay. Start with the tire on the sideline, first person flips it, sprints around the tire and tags the next person on the sideline. Pick the distance you want to go, near hash, far hash, far sideline, whatever you choose.
Teams of 4 or 5, team must complete 100 pushups and everyone in the group must do at least 10.
Tractor tire battle. Go until someone quits.
