Good grief we're dropping like flies. My guys are collecting concussions like they're at a taping of Oprah and she's giving out smacks to the head. The entire right side of my OL (G/T/TE) are down, plus my best D lineman got a concussion at church this weekend. AT. CHURCH. The football related ones all happened in games, so I don't think we're doing anything wrong in practice, unless limiting contact de-conditions them to contact. Frustrating because I've also kicked 4 guys off for fighting in school and my deepest team ever is starting to scramble to get a line up put together.

I don't have any thoughts on this, but can you share the church story?

Curious why you kicked four players off the team for fighting in school?

rsmith627 Apparently he was playing around and running through the parking lot, slipped, and hit his head on his Mom's car blb We've had a lot of discipline issues with this bunch this year, it got to the point we drew a line on some things.

I have to confess being puzzled over this matter of concussions...were we blessed as children back in my day?
I'm 68 YO in 3 weeks, and in my youth engaged in all manner of sports...surfing, skiing (both snow and water)...bicycles, skateboards, football, baseball, wrestling flew military aircraft and fought a war. I remember only once being close to a concussion...hit by Rocky Long in a high school game. Little guy was tough!
Are people over diagnosing this? Or were we just lucky...IDK, maybe the kids today hit harder...

Funny you should mention that because I'm 62, played high school, small college, and semi-pro football then rugby (in the scrum) and never had a concussion. I've been told that I probably did but they didn't diagnose them well back then but when they described the symptoms, I never had them. I can't say that nobody on the team did but not me. I think that there are so many today because there's more awareness and they're more careful now. Part of that is size, I think. When I played a 230 pounder was considered big. Now a 230 lb. OL is considered undersized and we see TB's that size (Not that often but sometimes). I never played against a 300 pounder. We have two. Just about everybody has at least one. Helmets may also contribute. Nobody in his right mind lowered his head into ramming position in a Riddell Suspension more than once.

Was talking about this with a young coach earlier (I am young too at 30, but he's 23 so there's even a gap in our experiences). We were debating the guardian caps because I don't think they're all that helpful which led to us talking about even when I played there weren't many concussions. They seemed to have gone up with the advent of things like the Revo Speed helmets because I think kids think they have a badass "concussion helmet" and are better protected when we all know nothing can stop your brain smacking around in your skull. We for sure are better at diagnosing them, and know more, but trainers are also quick to diagnose to cover themselves. I for sure never had one, and none of my friends did either.

One of my coaches played high school ball in the late 30's and early 40's till WW2 than in college after the war. He's still alive and very sharp, but his big point is the face mask.
He said in his days everything was about the shoulder and more rugby style because they still used a leather helmet, and that using the helmet and the head didn't become an issue till they put face mask on them.
