Not saying he doesn't know his offense, but (IIRC) Meyer was never an OC anywhere and doesn't seem to have the "guru" label for one side of the ball that some other coaches have (like Saban). Meyer seems to rely heavily on whoever is his OC. His Florida teams dropped off some after Mullen left and the same thing happened (though maybe not to the same extent) when Herman left OSU.
I would absolutely pick Meyer as one of my top two HC's, but that's not the same as coordinating. He doesn't have the same track record on one side of the ball as people like Malzahn, etc.
I don't think you are taking into account Urbans days at Bowling Green and Utah when he was developing and evolving many of the spread concepts that many are still running today. He made the idea of spreading to run the ball a popular concept long before others caught on. The stuff Malzahn, Briles, etc do are evolved ideas from Meyers early days. Its OK to lean heavily on your OC when you've given him the blue print. 😊
Heard Meyer speak at a clinic after his first year at BG.
Said he wanted to run the Veer Offense but knew no AD would hire him if he was going to do that.
So he started running Veer out of Gun with four WRs, similar to Rodriguez at West Virginia.
Later he added some Single Wing principles including more TE formations.
Basically now he is running Power football out of Spread combined with a fairly simple passing game that has outstanding receivers.

While I understand this is another fun barroom/talk radio type discussion question, I do think it leads to somewhat of a fundamental misunderstanding of how successful programs operate. I don't think there is any misunderstanding, this is just a fun "who would you hire" talk. Sometimes, you gotta let reality go. Perhaps, but i see many posts here where members mock the media and fans about "every play being a zone read" or calling any wing type running play an "end around" etc. Yet we go "fan boy" here as well.

I agree it was a "get off my lawn" post. I was just posting that to remind guys of that when they start the annual "the announcers are horrible. They don't know anything..the fans are morons, they don't know anything" posts.

brophy brings up a good point. Recruiting/HC: Saban OC/Asst. Recruiting: Urban DC: Dantonio ST: Beamer - he can unretire to coach special teams Problem with these guys is they are all going to do great and leave you to become a head coach. Great group of coaches though. To be honest when I was a HC that's the type of coaches I wanted on staff. IMO if you have aspirations of one day being a HC yourself, you will probably take your job more serious.

I aspire to be one, so whatever role I play wherever I am at, I do the best at that role. Right now I'm the JV OC (JV is separate from varsity at all times) and bust my ass to make sure our offense is ready to roll. I coach the QBs (this is my first time doing it and I'm a former lineman) and make sure I know what I am talking about when I try to teach them technique on anything.

I agree completely, it would just suck to start a staff and lose guys immediately. You are right though that those are the types of guys you want on a staff.

I'm with Brophy......get the best recruiters.
I was having this conversation with our staff today about how we play some coaches who think their coaching prowess can overcome any gap in talent.
My philosophy is: you be the genius, I'll take #24 (our all state LB/RB). Bill Belichick could have coached the team we played last Friday, and he would have gotten his @$$ kicked.
OK, I'm fired up and starting a new thread.
