I often preferred bringing them in on Saturday mornings. When I was in Illinois they would come in and watch film, lift and then usually go to the underclassmen game after that. All in all it was about 2 1/2 hours and then the rest of the weekend was their own.

Plus assistants had families-lives, too. So coaches would meet Sunday afternoon and kids would come in Sunday evening to watch our film plus some of opponent's, even if we had HUDL. Just being a smart tail, so the assistants and kids lives didn't matter on Sunday afternoons and evenings? It just looks like you would rather take up their Sunday afternoon and evenings and I would rather just get up and do it that next morning. I get in very late on Fridays also, but usually wake up early because of all the game adrenaline still running through my blood. By Sunday afternoon I am exhausted. I just like being done by 1015am on Saturday and having the rest of the weekend off. Neither way is better than the other.

In my experience Coaches-families have more youth Soccer-Football games, Gymnastics classes and similar activities on Saturdays than Sundays.
Especially Saturday AMs.
So coaches were off from Friday night until Sunday afternoon. They could watch film at their leisure.
Players would have most of two days to work if they chose, have a social life, family time, whatever until Sunday evening.
Our Sunday staff meetings were two hours at most. Sub-Varsity coaches left then.
Only thing coaches might have been doing if we weren't at Sunday afternoon meetings was watching Pro Football - and since the local team is the Lions, I was probably doing them a favor by bringing them in then.
Bottom line had enough time to evaluate our film and opponents to give meaningful feedback on our game, accurate scouting report (would show 15-30 minutes of opponent's film), and set the tone for the week.
But yes, "neither way is better than the other."

For those of you who believe bringing kids in Saturday AM after game would discourage them from untoward behavior on Friday nights - what do you do to discourage same on Saturday nights?

But I think that one of partying is better than two for the kids. And that is a side benefit of Sat morning, not a main benefit or goal.

In the Bible Belt you'd be ran out of town if you made them come in on Sunday.

Guess they don't take their HS Football seriously there.

Do you guys do a AM practice after games on Friday nights? What are pros and cons? Thanks We don't because we stay at the coaches' office breaking down the film until 4AM. Our HC usually doesn't leave until 7ish after he's finished the laundry. Saturday is coaches' day off so we can be with our families and attend/watch college games. Sunday we come in and have long meetings to break down opponents' film and game plan. We give the kids until Monday to rest and recover. I'm not sure how much they'd get out of film without us breaking it down and making notes for what to coach them up on first.

we have staff meetings on every sunday
i really like them they are usually about 2 hours
we are all expected to have watched our own film and opponent film by then we meet to talk about what we have seen and share ideas, go over the gameplan and any adjustments to practice schedule that week
we usually get everyone the first week or two and then some of the guys stop coming but we always get myself, HC, and our DB/TE coach there
we make most of the game plan decisions
my QB coach is about 50/50 but him and i text all day every day anyway so we talk all weekend to go over what he likes in the air
i'll be honest, half of our meetins is social for us, we all get along pretty well
but we get some really good ideas that come from it and sometimes it is helpful to get another person's perspective
also, because i do not coach any defense at all, sometimes having my perspective as an OC can help our D coaches see something in a different way
kind of what i think the other team wants to do, how they want to block it, how they set their pass pro, etc.

DC and I (OC) break down our side from the previous game as well as watch next opp and game plan sometime before 6:00 Sunday night. Assistants break down opp film on Hudl as soon as we get it and watch what they can on their own before 6:00 Sunday. We meet, come up with plan, practice tweeks, etc. and done by 8:00. Respect others opinions and preferences, but I wouldn't do it any other way. Effective, efficient and gives players and coaches their weekend.

We bring varsity in Saturday morning, watch some film, workout, then if it's a home 9th/JV rotation they go out there and watch for awhile. They are out and home before CFB games kickoff but we put that game to rest and are ready to move on, they actually seem to like it. As far as ACT or trips or jobs they can go. We do not forMally meet as a staff after or meet on Sunday's, abandoned that week 3 last year and have not struggled to be productive since.

Nothing on Saturdays Injured players? Trainer is available in the AM at the physical therapy joint. Film? HATE watching film Saturday. Never have time to watch it ourselves as coaches and watching the entire tape is generally worthless. You can find at least 3 things wrong on every play but they might not be the most important things that need correcting. Film takes 20 minutes on Monday, no big deal. Lifting? Why? I have yet to see anything that suggests it helps with recovery. Keep kids out of trouble Friday night? Really? Does your job keep you from drinking beer or staying up til 2 AM? Didn't think so. I have zero problem if y'all don't do anything on Saturdays. It isn't my favorite but it helps us and isn't overkill for us. If it was, we wouldn't do it. But I do have some questions to your responses. 1) Never have time to watch yourselves as coaches. Saturday will fix that. We will watch it the first time as coaches and players. Not saying you said this, but it seems to be that coaches feel they have to watch the film as a staff before they can with the players. Why? That is wasting time in my book. 2) You can find at least 3 things wrong on every play. Yep, and we point them all out. Isn't that the point? Have no idea how 20 minutes of film review of your game with the team works. Actually would love to know. I am always looking better ways and time saving. 3) Others said they lift on Saturdays. We don't. I am in agreement with you here. 4) Don't understand what you are trying to say about keeping kids out of trouble and me drinking beer or staying up until 2am. If I can help give kids a reason to go home earlier and not party on Friday nights after a game, then I believe that is a good thing for our team. Keeps them healthier, more rested, out of fights, from drinking and driving, etc. I am not the police and don't try to be the police of their lives, but if I can give them a reason to make good choices, well, I think that is a good thing. Lastly, I just really believe in film. We will spend 30 minutes of many practices watching yesterday's practice. You better believe I am going to make sure we review the game film. I correct everything. First steps, eyes, techniques, everything on every kid. This is the first year that we are not bringing the guys in on Saturday, for pretty much the same reason listed. First off when we watch the film Saturday we usually watch it for the first time with the kids. This year as a staff we will watch and discuss, expect the kids to watch it on their own by Monday's practice. Really if you want to keep them out of trouble then don't let them Friday after the game, I never got in trouble at 9 am Saturday practice it was always after the game. My HC just brought them in because that what was always done.

I used to bring the kids in Sat. morning like many of you. After year two, I said some things have to go or I will get burned out. I gave up Sat. film sessions. Best thing I have done. I have noticed more enthusiasm as the season goes on because the kids are not going six days a week. We make all of our comments on HUDL for the kids and they watch them on their own time. We check if they watch and ask them to do a short write up on what they need to improve on based on film study. This is turned into their position coaches.
