I've been considering some different career paths. Being in my mid-40's I may be "behind the power curve" on this idea...
But, I wanted insight to what other coaches thought about the profession of an NFL scout.
I have two wishes for responses, if you please:
1) Are there classes; certifications; schools, etc. that you need to attend to become certified as a Scout?
2) What do you think or know about the profession as a whole? Poor job security? Demanding travel schedule?
I worked a camp years ago with a guy who was a Scout for the Colts. He was pretty arrogant, and he named-dropped like nobody you've ever seen, but he seemed pretty happy in what he was doing.
Any specific details/experiences are appreciated.
*I did do a quick google search and checked out The Scouting Academy. I just don't know if it's worth $750.

Being somebody's kid is the surest way to get into a scouting department.
You could try CFL teams, they keep some scouts around the country and might take you on for the right price.

I read an article describing what scouts do. They get to the college facility early, watch film and talk to the coaches. Then they watch the kid work out, leave for the next place, check into the hotel, and write up the reports. Sounds like a pretty miserable job.

Coach, I'm seeing the same things in the articles I've just read. I'm thinking this isn't for me. Sounds like a younger man's game as well.

One of the responsibilities of a coach that I worked with at my first college job was "Liaison to NFL" He basically was the point man when NFL scouts came to the school (FCS). One day a Patriots scout asked the coach his opinion on some players and was impressed with his analysis. They got to talking, guy left coaching for NFL scouting and 16 years later he is a GM. shocktroop34 Entry level probably is a young mans game, but in some organizations (all are different) there are tiers. Also a coaching colleague's dad was able to work out a deal where he did some scouting from home. Of course he had connections (friends with the Pollian's ) and had coached in the NFL and D1 ball. He simply went to Syracuse University and scouted all of their film as a "Big East" scout for the Colts.

I believe the first requisite is to check your family tree and see who is related to someone working in the NFL. The NFL (and becoming NCAA) is so isolated with their own kind that folks not directly related or lucked with pure happenstance have no way of breaking into.
Good luck coach, but you're looking for an extremely thankless and overtaxing situation that is near impossible to get into.

Depends on the pay and time of the year. Right now, it sounds amazing!!! My day today 8am 4th-6th grade football fundamentals 8:45 girls strength and speed 9:30 boys strength and speed 11 football conditioning 1130-1230 football 1 introduce new soccer coach at press conference 130-3 catch up on some bull crap work 3 meet with headmaster and parents - this is the fun one 5? 6? whenever meeting ends - clean up renovated field house to get ready for football which starts on Monday 9,10,11??? go home. Went home at 9 last night after spending 4 hours installing insulation and ceiling tiles in said field house. Also on tab for today, Find trainer for next weeks because our is injured and out. Like I said, we start Monday. Get AC fixed in said field house because despite new insulation, ceiling tiles and broken window replaced and new AC installed, it is not working well. It is 80 in there. Oh yeah, we start practice Monday. Answer 30 emails on peewee football and cross country and forward them to our peewee and cross country coaches and remind those coaches that they need to get a school wide email out so I don't get bothered with all that crap!! Write thank you note and hand deliver it a super gracious donor of brand new shoulder pads. We donated all our pads to West Virginia high schools affected by the floods. Hire assistant JV coach. Did I say anything about Monday? Give out all new shoulder pads since we gave them all away. Did I mention that we start Monday??? Reschedule pictures that were already rescheduled Friday because we have faculty meetings starting next Friday. Move supplies that were dumped at my school office door to the field house. Order pad for new two man sled and one man sled. We were lucky and just had money donated to cover this cost yesterday. Get new physicals filed away. Give out some shirts to coaches. By the way, amazingly, I have procrastinated none of this. LOL Print out new worksheets and put them up in weight room. Where can I sign up for NFL scout? I am grateful because I have a job, have a good job, and we have parents that care and are willing to donate. But dang, NFL scout sounds nice on days like today.

To me, that sounds pretty enjoyable. Ypu don't have a family yet, do you? No kids (yet). But, I really enjoy travel, even when it's for work. I love to drive or fly anywhere.
