So my wife is being induced on Monday afternoon next week.
I have been told that I am allowed 1 emergency day for the birth of my child, any more days I want to take off are personal days, and I have to pay for my sub.
So basically I feel as though I am being "punished" for wanting to be a good husband and father.
Way to talk about family values, and not practice what you preach administration.

do you have sick days? do they count the same as personal days? if you don't have to pay for sub on sick days, then you might be careful ... flu season, you know.
plus, how hard would it be to get a doctor to write you a note? i mean, you're already in the hospital ... lol

That's bullsh-t.... Do you have any paid sick days you can take? I would say take vacation time, but that crap too. Hope it works out. If it's any consolation for you, I'm going to run the DW next year.  |

Problem with that Hueys is I was advised by my principal to turn in my green sheet (leave form) so they already know why I am to be absent.
Sick Days and Emergency Days are exactly the same here
Personal days we get 2, which I used up due to illness in my daycare facility (I stayed home with my daughter since we have no family close by).
I know I could get a doctors note...but they would know it is faked. LOL
Nothing like dealing with administrators....(and my father used to be one) LOL

how many classes need to be covered? could you somehow convince some teachers to help out and cover a class during their conference period or something? say, joe the history teacher doesn't have a class 2nd period, he could cover your class as a sub.... etc.

Don't you have some teacher friends to help you out? How can your principal condemn this when people are helping your out for being a good dad/husband/etc.  |

Our district went through heck with this subject. A male teacher wanted to take leave like a female teacher would.
It went to the board, but I am not sure of the final decision. I believe he was given a bunch of days and the situation will be put into our contracts. If I find out the exact situation I'll post.

We are quite pumped about it. 2 little girls running around at home can keep a guy fairly well grounded.
Funny thing is this really is an emergency...she is being induced due to a medical reason, due date is actually March 4. Doc says he wants to get the baby out before it is to big to be handled naturally (as in does not want to have to do a C section).

Family Medical Leave Act grants you full rights during pregnancy. It really depends on how much you want to push the issue. They have to let you have it off and it can not cost you anything to do it. This is one of those government protected rights. |

This is correct!!! the birth of baby number 5 I took off 3 weeks the first 5 were family leave the next 10 were sick days. All approved by the board. We (wife is teacher in same district) were even able to have fellow teachers "donate" sick days for my wife. Our union does a great job with this kind of issue. Didn't have any problems nor did it cost me any money. |

Talk to your union rep if in a public school. You should at the very least get to take sick days. In most places you get family leave days that don't count against you at all.

Full-time attorney/volunteer football coach here. shs and rebel are correct. You might want to politely request that the administration consult district counsel. The Federal Family and Medical Leave Act is at 29 USC 2611 through 2617, and provides in summary that any employer that employs 50 or more employees must grant up to 12 weeks leave in any 12 month period for, among other things, the birth of a child, and to care for that child. This is a federally protected right that you have, and there must be a way to tactfully suggest to the administration that they are opening themselves up to damages and penalties by denying you that right.

Congratulations. BTW, the hospitals are now ridiculous when it comes to males. I wasn't allowed to sign a thing. I couldn't have an ID bracelet to pick up my child from the nursery and when they talked to my wife about the name, etc. I had to leave the room. Not to mention, I couldn't hold my son unless my wife was in there with me.
They said it is because of all the fathers who come in and try to kidnap kids and it also is due to some women's groups complaining. I hope your stay is much better. Good luck!

It's good that the Federal Government allows you the maternity leave, but for crying out loud - can't your principal our supt. just grant you a couple of extra days? Where is the trust and loyalty for busting your butt the past seveal years?

Two words...Title 9. If a female can miss an unlimited amount of days due to birth, so can you. Could it be discrimination?
I have known male coaches who tried to get out coaching for a year due to the birth of a child and were not allowed. They had to resign their teaching and coaching positions so a new coach could be brought in. In the same district, female coaches were allowed to take a year off from coaching and be with their child, then return back to coaching the next year.
Just do what you think is right and let them deal with it...it's your family man.

Coachf, that's crazy. Do you have a restraining order against you that you neglected to mention? It would seem that way. It was just for our 2nd child. For our first boy, I was able to be in for all those things. It may just be that hospital, too. |

FMLA comes out of your sick days.
FMLA info is supposed to be posted in your school, typcially the teachers room.

FMLA only talks of having to grant UNPAID leave (from what I could find)
says nothing of personal vs. emergency/sick days
too excited to be too upset about it all

Knighter, we just had our first child in early January. I got six weeks if I wanted, I don't think there is anything the district can do if you push the issue. I got to use my sick days towards the leave.

Coach Congratulations:
When my daughter was born I got 2 days via the contract and then I took another 5 days of sick leave. I was fortunate enough to have a great principal who supported it all.
Enjoy the time with your family... and my thoughts and prayers hope that everyone arrives safe, heathly and happy.

FMLA-- Up to 12 weeks unpaid leave. Technically they can not pay for your insurance at that time as well.. All it does is protect your job. nothing else... I run a restuarant..and my salaried asst. manager is due next month.. i am well versed in FMLA..
tell them to suck a rock and you'll see them in a week
