Ok, so coachd's venture into the business world is coming to an end. The lure of $$$$ did not outweigh the lure of breaking down film at 9pm on Saturday Nights apparently,
However, due to the career I was just in, and that structure, it would be VERY foolish to stay in the position until next fall. So basically I am free from now, until I find a teaching job (maybe mid year--worst case next fall)
So the result is I have more than a years salary saved up, and no bills/responsibilities at all. What to do. I was thinking about that Switzerland job advertised in the job section, does anyone know about that? I was also thinking about calling up some of my ex college coaching cohorts, and seeing if they needed a free guy to be a copy boy for a few weeks... Heck maybe even a few NFL teams (chances are they say no, but who knows), Just looking for something to do.

Certified in physical ed (Just like most people with degrees in both Finance and Accounting, and a Masters Degree). ..and that is all I want to teach. Left the business world once purposely to get certified to teach PE. Was lured back by $$$ and some worries about the future and teacher pay.... Decided the hell with the future and middle class crunch.
i guess I am not posting this so much as a "looking for job" post, but rather a "OK, what would you do in Mid October if you were free from responsibility and ready to get back into coaching.

This probably needs to go to the jobs threads but I would look for a school in your area that needs some help. Drop in and introduce yourself to the AD's and Head coaches and let them know you want to volunteer - maybe even coach JV or frosh since its late in the season - to show them you are willing to work. Other than that, be very up front that you MISSED working with kids and want to get back into it.

fbdoc---don't think I am makign myself clear. I am not looking for a job right now, I am looking for ideas of things to do right now, that I won't get to do again once I am back teaching and coaching.

the Switzerland thing.....gee I dunno (pm 'crl' first) because that sounds like it would be a real headache.
In the meantime, if it were me, I'd visit, watch as much college & high school games in the Gulf, because you won't have the luxury of watching other teams during your OWN season (it sucks sometimes).
Unfortunately, you can't really productively hang out with college programs until March (Spring Ball) because they are recruiting before then.
In the meantime, like I'm sure you've already done, create all your cutups (for teaching schemes) and playbook concepts you want to bring with you come next season. Have it all ready to go in a concise package.
In summation, go to all the college & HS games you can because the weekends won't be free next year.

So essentially what you are saying is that you have enough money to not work for the next 9 months, are free from any other responsibility, and are looking of what you can do now to better yourself as a coach?
If I understand you correct then I would go around and travel to as many games as possible. Jr high, HS, College, NFL I would go check them all out and take it all in. Make mental notes of things that certain teams did that you liked and then file it away for next fall.

How about visiting some top high school or college programs in your state?

If you want to get into the HS ranks again, I'd look at tapes, attend clinics, pick the brains of coaches at all levels either by phone, in person, or email. This is what I tried to when I retired 2 years ago after 36 years of teaching and 37 years of coaching. I got on as an OL/DL coach this fall and I'm enjoying the hell out of it, even though we are not winning. It sure feels good to back in the active coaching ranks.
By the way how long have you been away?
