We like to play a game at least once a week during our summer workouts and we like it to take the place of our conditioning. The game we play now is a lot of fun and usually the kids will stay after to play on days we don't do a game. Just wondering what other games you play with your kids.
Ours- Flicker Ball (I am pretty sure there is a game called this that is played differently, but this is what we have always called it)
2 teams between 8 and 12 players on each side. 40 yard field with 10 yard end zones. 40 yards wide. (can be bigger or smaller depending on available players)
Objective- The game is a lot like rugby except the ball is thrown in any direction. Basically, a teams goal is to score a touchdown (worth 1 point). A touchdown is any time you catch a ball in the end zone (you can not run or step into the end zone, even if you are an inch short). Players begin by throwing the ball to a teammate. They are allowed 3 steps before a throw and it can be thrown in any direction. Defense tries to intercept or bat ball down. If the ball is not caught and hits the ground the other team immediately takes possession where the ball fell and starts to drive the opposite way. Speed is the key in turnover and leading to points.
Rules- No knocking the ball away from an opponent other than during an attempted reception. No tossing the ball away or kicking the ball away to buy time for your team (2 minute penalty, just like hockey).
Cherry-pick rule (we set up a cone at the 10 yd line on each side. Each team is responsible for returning all players past the line when possession changes hands to make sure no one hangs out in the end zone. Teams are responsible for calling a player out when he does not return past cherry pick line).
The game is more conditioning than we can ever do in a practice and it really helps our receivers and Backs. PLus, the O-line loves to get their own team together to try and dominate the "skill" guys. I also think it really leads to some strategizing (or strategerie) by our players. They will set up their own defenses and wait for plays to set up. Some of them will even run picks and screens like basketball. I have even seen a 3-man weave.
WARNING- Do not play in pads or full contact. BAD BAD BAD Collisions. A safety like I was would love to just pick off people unsuspecting of the hit. We actually were dumb enough to try it once. It didn't take long for our psychotic LB to murder someone. Stick to non-contact.
What else do you guys do?
